How to watch the BBC iPlayer using Windows Mobile (HTC Touch Diamond only)

iPlayer on Windows Mobile
The BBC iPlayer service allows UK residents to watch full length episodes of recently broadcast BBC programs using a computer or an iPhone. But there's no official client for Windows Mobile. Of course, that hasn't stopped the hackers at XDA-Developers from figuring out how to make the iPhone interface work on Windows Mobile.

There are a few things to keep in mind with this hack. First, iPlayer content is only available to folks living in the UK or people who happen to know a good proxy server that will trick the software into thinking you're in the UK. Second, the application only works witht he HTC Diamond right now, although support for other Windows Mobile devices could be added later.

Finally, you'll need to have a copy of the commercial application CorePlayer installed on your device and associated with MOV files, because it's the only Windows Mobile media player that can handle videos using H.264 and AAC.

If you're cool with all of those requirements, then all you need to do is download and install the iPlayer app for Windows Mobile in order to search, browser, download, and watch iPlayer videos on your HTC Touch Diamond.

Hacked Windows Mobile 6.5 beta hits the web

The final version of Windows Mobile may not be ready to go until the second half of 2009, but an early beta version of the next generation operating system for cellphones and PDAs appears to made its way to some of the shadier areas of the internet. And a member of the XDA-Developers forum has figured out how to get it running on the HTC BlueAngel, which is a 5 year old mobile phone.

The video quality is best described as godawful. But it does show off some of the features of Windows Mobile 6.5. The operating system features Internet Explorer Mobile 8, and the OS is overall a bit more finger friendly.

Unofficial Windows Mobile 6 update for Dell Axim X51v

Dell Axim X51v WM6
Earlier this month the hackers at the XDA-developers forum managed to port Windows Mobile 6 to the discontinued but still popular Dell Axim X50v PDA. But anyone who had gone out and bought the newer (but also discontinued) Dell Axim X51v were out of luck. Until this weekend that is. Another hacker has released an unofficial version of Windows Mobile 6 for the X51v.

This update is only for early adopters who are willing to void their warranty. There appear to be several issues, including:
As with the X50v, there are ways to downgrade your X51v after installing Windows Mobile 6. You'll want to make sure you have an X51v ROM and bootloader loaded onto a FAT32 formatted SD card. Then you press the wireless, power, and reset buttons simultaneously.

Check out the XDA-developers forum to find a ROM you might want to use. Remember, the ROM has to be for the X51v, not the X51, or X50v.

Get that iPhone keyboard look on Windows Mobile

iphone-like keyboardIt was just a matter of time before we saw more iPhone inspired Windows Mobile mods. While we won't see a hack to let your phone automatically change from landscape to portrait when you rotate the screen anytime soon (it doesn't have the hardware), you can make your on-screen keyboard a bit more iPhone-like.

The folks over at XDA Developers have released a skin for Happy Tapping Keyboard that looks like the iPhone keyboard. While one of the main things iPhone users complain about is the lack of a physical keyboard, its on-screen keyboard is a bit easier to use for thumb typing than the default Windows Mobile keyboard.

This is just a skin, so don't expect Apple's predictive text system. Windows Mobile's predictive text will kick in, offering suggestions as you type, but it won't give you any leeway when you hit the wrong key as the iPhone sometimes will.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
