Forza Motorsport 3 Demo now available for download on Xbox Live

The playable demo of Forza Motorsport 3 for Xbox 360 is now available for download on Xbox Live for Gold level members.

The eagerly awaited third installment in the massively succesful racing franchise is due for release on October 23rd, but Forza fans can get behind the wheel of 5 cars and 1 track today and experience the full cockpit view, damage and rollover features as well as the game's new 'rewind' function.

The cars featured in the demo are the 2007 Porsche #80 Flying Lizard 911 GT3-RSR, 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro, 2009 Ferrari California, 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR and 2009 Mini John Cooper Works, all of which can be given a thrashing around the game's Spanish mountain circuit named 'Camino Viejo'.

The demo also allows players to post their laptimes to online leaderboards.

So that's the rest of my day written off then (once the 1.25GB download completes)!

Toyota wants you to buy a video game car

Remember when the United States army offered a first-person shooter to boost recruitment? If Toyota's new foray into video games in any indication, it was a move that worked. Toyota wants to recruit you to buy their Yaris, a car designed by, of all people, a video game company. Incidentally, the projectile-shooting revver depicted in the game doesn't shoot in real life; nor does it have that interesting tentacle as standard equipment.

Starting today, XBox Live users can download the game for free and play it on their Microsoft consoles. Time will tell whether the advertising scheme is effective, but we suspect most gamers will be more interested in discovering whether or not this game is actually fun.

Microsoft integrating Instant Messaging on Xbox

msn live messengerFirst instant messaging distracted us from our day to day work, now it's set to distract our gaming life too.

Microsoft has announced that they will be integrating Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 consoles. This new addition allows users to chat straight from their televisions using Messenger.

How will users type though? Well, Microsoft has developed a virtual keyboard on the Xbox 360 where users scroll through letters, or users can always plug in a USB keyboard to consoles. Microsoft will also be launching a QWERTY text input device that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller that supports text and instant messaging as well.

Do DLS readers think Instant Messaging is a good addition to the Xbox? Or is it just another potentially distracting 'feature'?

MS Investigates Fraud on Xbox Live

Microsoft is no stranger to accusations that its Windows security software is a little, well less than secure, and now it's having to look into accusations that there is fraud occurring on its Xbox Live gaming service.

Xbox Live is the community service on the Xbox games console that allows users to interact with other gamers worldwide in order to play games together and also allows users to purchase services via the Xbox Live Marketplace. Xbox Live subscribers purchase 'Microsoft Points' with a credit card and can redeem those points for the products such as map packs, game extensions or arcade games for download to their Xbox hard drive.

The allegations of fraud first came about in February when an Xbox Live user posted a message on the Xbox Live forums alleging that his or her account had been hacked and Microsoft Points purchased and used without permission. It seems that it wasn't the only allegation as Microsoft has now come out and publicly admitted that it is investigating further incidents of fraud on the gaming network.

It remains to be seen if the fraud relates to a software or network security problem or if criminals are exploiting the network's community based features to extract sensitive information from other players. While any community network will run the risk of criminals abusing the confidence of others, should any network or software security glitch come to light it will be very embarrassing for Microsoft.

Xbox movie downloads, take that Apple

Microsoft Living roomRussell Heimlich over at our sister blog DV Guru has a great article on Microsoft's step into the living room (beyond gaming) with their TV offering, which soundly beats Apple's actual delivery of their iTV device. We have all known for awhile that Microsoft was aiming for our living rooms with the sexy stylings of the Xbox 360 and the many media-streaming features it offers. Along with HD-DVD support, Microsoft is far ahead of Apple, giving all us dumb consumers a way to have living room Internet-enabled content. Of course I am talking about us consumers other than Russell, who has had this functionality for a year, and some of our readers even longer I suspect. So what of Microsoft, Apple, and your living room or den? Is the Xbox 360 the killer app of cozy-home living room multimedia, or will Apple reign supreme, eventually? If it isn't operating systems we're fighting over, it's the living room, or MP3 players, or browsers. Xbox movie downloads, here we come. If the Xbox contained a HD-DVD burner, that would be sublime.

Microsoft says parental features are not enough

XBOX leashDespite Microsoft's recent efforts to include parental controls in their products such as Windows, XBOX, and others, they say features alone are not enough. Microsoft is launching a campaign to help parents understand and take advantage of the features that exist in Microsoft products to protect their kids from unwanted content. The "Safety is no game" campaign aims to teach parents how to block access and use other parental features to protect their kids. Microsoft has also partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Best Buy to help spread the word on their new campaign. This is a great idea, and since parents are so busy these days, this campaign will ease the worries of some who cannot be home 24/7 to monitor their child's activities by helping parents put a leash on their kid's gaming before leaving the house. Microsoft is also doing themselves a favor by helping parents feel more secure about their products, and will most likely see positive numbers in their bottom line as a result of this campaign. As a parent myself, I jump on board with just about anyone trying to help me do my job better or easier, without more hassle or cost.

The Web According to Ballmer

Steve BallmerBusinessWeek is running a great interview with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The interview covers a ton of ground, beginning with Google's YouTube acquisition and ending with Vista. In between, Ballmer talks about the Web 2.0 valuations and "Bubble 2.0," the business transition from Xbox to Xbox 360, Microsoft's recent high-profile hires, Bill Gates' impending departure, Microsoft's competition, and, of course, the Zune. Vista is a disappointingly small part of the discussion, but it's still worth a read if you're interested in what Microsoft is up to.

Fishy web site offering Xbox game downloads

XBOX 360 games
PRweb has a cheery article on a website of questionable practices, at least in my mind. The article states that the site gives gamers FREE unlimited access to games, software, albums, music, and movies to download to your XBOX 360. Take one look at the site and you'll see what I mean, it looks like a scam. A site whose URL starts with www.officialmoviedownloads.com doesn't look great to me. The graphics and layout of the site seems to point to "credit-card harvesting operation" in my head. They want a one time fee for unlimited downloads of (no doubt stolen or ripped copies) of all kinds of software. It just seems fishy, don't you think?

Microsoft's answer to the PS3

gears of warOnly Halo 3 would do any damage in Microsoft's war with Sony's PlayStation line of gaming consoles. Gears of War isn't going to pull enough attention away from the launch of such a highly anticipated console as PS3. Gears of War is probably a fine game, not that I've played it. There is a slight possibility it will be a better game than Halo, but I doubt it. The Halo franchise already has a large following which is really what would do damage to Sony's PS3, if released. Gears of War is new, but there is something to be said for an established gaming brand like Halo going up against a new console. If Microsoft really wanted to do damage to Sony's PS3 launch they should release (at least should have planned to release) Halo 3 right when PS3 is launched.

Microsoft to offer Xbox 360 dev kit for $100?

Xbox 360There's a rumor about that later today at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose Microsoft will announce the availability of a game development kit for the Xbox 360 that anybody may buy for $100. That would be fantastic news for small, independent developers who want to break into the console market, and I think it would make perfect business sense for Microsoft. But I'm not sure I believe it. I think that eventually the big console manufacturers are going to have to come around to the fact that indie developers and the homebrew scene are going to be around whether they like it or not, and offering cheap development kits is probably one of the best ways to turn that in their favor, but somehow I just can't see Microsoft being this proactive. If they do indeed make such an announcement later today, I rather expect it to be many-strings-attached, but I've got my fingers crossed for the contrary.

How to run MythTV on your Xbox

MythTVNow that the Xbox 360 is out you've got to find something to do with your old 2001-style Xbox. You can either give it to the ungrateful neighbor kids, or you can put it to better use by turning it into a PVR. Xbox Resource Center has a slick guide to getting MythTV, the open source PVR software, running on your big black box. Of course, the Xbox has neither a TV tuner nor the horsepower to encode video at a reasonable rate, so you're actually going to set it up as a front-end to a copy of MythTV running on your tuner-equipped PC. It's fairly straightforward, but will get you up to your elbows in Linux terminals and assumes you already have a mod chip in your Xbox, but doesn't everybody?

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
