WWII computer replica rebuilt

The National Codes Center at Blentchley Bletchley north of London, has unveiled a WWII Computer replica that was once used to go sort through encrypted German messages during World War II. The replica model which was built by more than 60 volunteers using original blueprints took over 10 years to complete. The Turing Bombe computer was developed by Alan Turing, who is otherwise quite commonly knows as the father of the modern computer. The computers main job was to decrypt messages from German machines. I'm sure Mr. Turing would be proud that everyone is sitting on their computers right now, surfing YouTube, and reading Download Squad.

Danger from the Deep - Today's Time Waster

danger from the deepThere are plenty of space shooters, racing games, and puzzles... But how many sub simulators are still out there? Danger from the Deep is a sub simulator, it's open source, and it's free. Right now it's only for Linux and Windows, but it uses SDL and OpenGL, so in theory could be ported to nearly any *NIX-based OS (sorry Be). The graphics are really beautiful. If you've never been in a sub, they convey the cramped, rough life that used to be a WWIII sub. You'll have to have some moldy sock soup and rusty bolts nearby to simulate the smell, but the overall ambience is fantastic. DD isn't ready for primetime as a game however, as damage isn't realistic (one shot and a ship sinks immediately). But it's pretty cool to see just how boring underwater travel can be. Just kidding, what's neat about DD is the ability to tinker with such an interesting machine. Subs are fascinating to me, and in WWII they were finally getting the things right to a degree where they really became deadly. The German subs (which is what you're driving) were particularly effective. And if just running around has you bored, you can create your own missions via simple text files. Dive, dive, dive!

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
