Why choose Mowser for mobile transcoding over Google?

MvsG
If you've ever used a mobile phone or PDA to surf the web, you've probably noticed that some sites render better than others on a small screen. That's because some web developers design special mobile versions of their pages. But there are also several web-based services that "mobilize" web sites by stripping some data and presenting you with a stripped down version of a web page.

Probably the most popular web-site mobilizing services are Google Mobile and Skweezer. Mowser is a less popular service, but it might be the best of the bunch. We first checked out Mowser earlier this year, but a recent article from Mowser creator Russel Beattie made us take another look.

How to get your content removed from Google

how to get your content removed from googleHave you ever wondered how you can get your content wiped out of the Google directory, as some newspapers have been vying to do recently? Google has a plan for webmasters.

The Google Webmaster Blog outlines a few methods that site owners can use in order to ensure their content is not indexed by the search engine. This can include a simple robots.txt file that either blocks Google completely or blocks certain directories on a server. The best way to go about removal however, is to verify the ownership of your site through Google's webmaster tools by inserting a small line of code in a webpage. There is a diagnostic tab there called URL Removals. From there you can submit a New Removal Request and choose to remove Individual URLs, a directory, your entire site, or cached copies.

Of course if you end up changing your mind, Google also has a way to reinclude content. Keep in mind, either way could take a few months or more to refresh on all of Google's servers.

Google's Webmaster Tools get an update

Google Webmaster Tools

We all want to know how our websites are doing in this crazy World Wide Web of ours. Google just made this process a little bit easier with a great update to their Webmaster Tools.

With the additions of the "Links" tab to the tool set, finding out who is linking to your site could never be easier. With just a quick verification of your site's ownership you can quickly and easily find all internal links, link-backs that are within your domain, and external links to any page of your website or blog. So now, instead of using Google's Link operator, you can use this new feature. You are also able to download the entire table of links to your computer for quicker and easier navigation of the entire list.

In the process of typing this article, the list processing was a bit slow and the "Links" tab just disappeared. So it still has a few kinks to work out, but it should be completely live within a day or so. This would be a great tool for any webmaster and is completely free for use on any site you have.

Google announces Webmaster Central

Google announces Webmaster CentralAnyone eager to climb Google's pagerankings - listen up, as Google has just introduced a slew of tools specifically designed to allow webmasters to learn more about and interact with Google's crawling and indexing systems. Complete with a topic-specific blog, this new Webmaster Central service offers tools like a site status wizard (I thought we were getting away from 'wizards' in the industry), statistics, diagnostics and sitemap submission tools, as well as a discussion group and a webmaster help center for good measure.

I took a quick breeze through the offerings in Webmaster Central, and it looks like a fairly comprehensive set of tools. Of course, with Google's typical track record for pricing with similar services, everything under the Webmaster Central umbrella is free, so what are you waiting for?

Edit web pages in real time in Opera

opera reload from cache webmaster toolOpera 9 has a neat little feature that lets users, specifically webmasters, play with live website code, and then run it in the cache. This Opera browser option allows users to load a webpage, view and edit the source code, and click the "Reload from cache" button to check out the changes made to the site. The site then runs from the user's cache, playing back any changes made in the code. This is a nice little option if you like tinkering with code to try and find out techniques, tips and tricks of other developers.

Google's logo designer gets some nice PR

google logo designer dennis hwangDennis Hwang is the webmaster from Google that designs those wicked little Google logos that seem to be changing all the time, depending on the season, and special occasion.

Dennis is getting some huge PR, as CNN is actually profiling him. Millions of people each day see this guys work when they visit the Google search page. Hwang started mucking with the Google logo way back in 2000 when he started as an intern and developed a special Fourth of July logo. Even though he only spends 20% of his time working on the logos, they always turn out awesome!

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
