Trendrr - compare and share social data


There are plenty of comparison tools for site traffic. Given a few minutes, we're willing to bet our readers could create a graph of a site's popularity over time. But what about graphing an artist's plays on MySpace or YouTube, how often people write blog posts about each presidential candidate, or how many people are seeding a file on BitTorrent? Trendrr lets you graph, compare, and mash up this kind of data with ease.

Trendrr makes graphing simple by including a drag-and-drop scratchpad that lets you edit and compare graphs with a minumum of effort. The system is based on the RESTful api, which means advanced users can hack together their own trends - there's an example on the site of graphing your computer's CPU usage over time. For everyone else, though, the list of built-in data sources includes popular sites like eBay and YouTube. Don't miss the gallery of popular graphs, which are sometimes informative and sometimes just funny.

Twiddla offers no-fuss whiteboarding

Twiddla is an online whiteboard that lets you start collaboratively marking up practically anything: a blank page, your own images, or a website. It was created to solve the hassle of e-mailing design proofs back and forth for comments. With Twiddla, you can do real-time markup in a matter of minutes, without even signing up.

Twiddla does have accounts - it's in public beta, so you can sign up now - but you can start a new meeting without one, and edit your user details on the fly. Once you're in a meeting, you've got all the basic markup tools you would expect: pen, text box, some basic shapes. You can also upload images or browse to a site and start marking it up. Communication during the meeting is supported by a text chat box and an audio chat button.

It might not be as full-featured as some of the more established whiteboard services out there, but it definitely scores points for quick setup and ease of use. There's even a bookmarklet for your browser, so you can "twiddle" any page with one click. Sure, we could find a couple things to complain about -- an eraser and a tool for drawing neat arrows would be nice, for starters -- but we're in a good mood because we just used a functional web service without having to sign up.

InsideTrip searches fast, comfortable flights

Inside TripFinding a cheap flight isn't too hard these days. At least a half-dozen major sites search for the best fares, and many of them will search their competitors and compare rates for you. InsideTrip is trying to carve out a new niche in this crowded market by focusing less on the cheapest flights, and more on the easiest, most comfortable ones.

InsideTrip rates flights on its TripQuality scale, which includes your choice of 12 different factors. Sick of flights being late? Check the "on-time stats" box. Is sitting in the middle seat one of your pet peeves? InsideTrip has a box for that, too: you can search by historical load factor.

We conducted a few test searches to see how much more you could be paying for these amenities, but it turns out that it's not that expensive. InsideTrip just lets you narrow down the same cheap results the other sites offer, based on what's most important to you. If you'll gladly endure a few hours of wait time or some lost bags to save money, skip it. If you're concerned about everything from security wait times to the age of your plane, you might want to give it a look.

Myspace to start ad-supported music delivery service

Myspace is currently in talks with the four major record-labels to offer its users an ad-supported music delivery service. We say "music delivery service" because it's currently unknown whether the record labels will concede to free downloads or force the News Corp owned company into creating a streaming service similar to Last.fm.

Either way, the service will be ad-supported and DRM-free.

Whether or not the new Myspace service happens, the news is great for consumers. Even if the record labels haven't figured it out yet, other companies are trying to come up with ways to get music to the people for free (or at least cheap and easy - like Amazon's MP3 Download Store).

Fluid: Give any webapp a home on your Mac OS X desktop

Do you have Gmail perma-tabbed in your browser window? Are you a Google Docs devotee? Is Facebook bookmarked as your home page?

If you nodded your head to any of the above questions (or blushed in embarrassment from your web 2.0 addictions), then Fluid is something you should take a look at.

Fluid, a beta download for Mac OS X Leopard, creates Site Specific Browsers that run as independent desktop applications. In other words, you can put a Gmail browser page on your desktop, complete with its own customizable dock icon and standard menu bar. The best thing is, if Firefox (or any web browser) should happen to crash, your desktop application is untouched.

So how does it work?

Launch Fluid to see a small display window where you can specify the URL of the webapp, give the window a name, and choose a customized or default icon (there's even a whole Flickr group of downloadable high-res icons). Click "create," and then launch your application. That's all there is to it.

Fluid gets its inspiration from Prism, a project by Mozilla labs. However, because Fluid is Mac only, and is based on Safari's WebKit rendering engine, it claims a more native look and feel over Prism.

Fluid is currently in beta (version 0.6), and requires Leopard.

Obama most popular with tech savvy voters

As you may know, the New Hampshire primary for the US 2008 Presidential election is today. Although web 2.0 itself has not been positioned as a major campaign issue, the power of the web and social networks has played a large role in not only individual candidate campaigns, but in the debate process itself. Additionally, with his victory in the Iowa caucus, Democratic candidate Barack Obama has become the first candidate leading in Internet metrics to pull off a major victory. So this begs the question, are Obama's fans the most savvy and "connected" supporters? Well, in addition to having the most friends on MySpace and supporters on Facebook, Sen. Obama is also leading in the war of campaign widgets.

According to Widgetbox, a major distributed widget marketplace, Obama has nearly double the number of widget impressions as his nearest opponent. In fact, he has almost as many impressions as his two nearest competitors combined! These widgets are embedded on personal web pages, blogs and social networking sites. This certainly gives additional (if ancillary) credence to the idea that Obama is the most plugged-in candidate.

Though it may seem like everything has an RSS feed nowadays, lots of sites still lack the feature, leaving RSS fiends with no option but to actually surf the web (blasphemous!). Fortunately, there's Dapper: The Data Mapper, a web service that will take information from a site and package it in the form of your choice (RSS feeds, Google Maps, iCalendar, and more).

In order to create a "Dapp," or Dapper app, navigate to the Dapper site and click on "create a new Dapp." The next few steps are very interesting, requiring users to answer a variety of questions regarding the source of information. The answers will depend on the format you choose and the information you'd like to collect. Options include RSS, Dapp XML, Google Gadget and others. The process of creating a Dapp should be pretty easy if the user understands the concept of RSS.

It may seem like RSS feed creation is the most obvious function of the service, but it's in the more complex stuff that Dapper shines. You can, for example, have the latest YouTube search results for a given keyword appear in your iCalendar daily. The possibilities certainly aren't endless, but there are a lot of them.

Netvibes Ginger moves into private beta, lets outsiders peek in through the glass

Netvibes has just launched a private beta of its new iteration, Ginger. To those lucky few who were given an invite; now you must know how those kids who found Wonka's Golden Ticket felt. For the rest of us, Netvibes was kind enough to post a run-through of some of their pending and exciting features.

Netvibes has been one of the most popular and easy to use personal start pages for a long while (well, long in internet years; they're like dog years, you know). They offer tons of useful, ready to load widgets. Widgets include eBay, most popular online email accounts such as Yahoo! Mail and Gmail, Facebook, Digg, and many more. You can also insert any RSS feed and set up tabs for different content.

A few features upcoming in Ginger:

  • Listen to your favorite web radio stations through Netvibes
  • 2 GB of free storage space for every registered user

Ginger also looks poised to springboard into the next generation of the social internet. You can tag interesting blog posts, pictures, and video from your Netvibes page and then share them with your friends and family.

Meebo and SpeedDate run PR stunt with blogger celebrities


If your name is SpeedDate.com, here's a great idea for a PR stunt: Mix 8 celebrity bloggers and a SpeedDate.com session, bake at 400 degrees, record, and release the highlight reel on YouTube. That's exactly what happened in conjunction with Meebo to advertise Meebo's new SpeedDate app.

Perhaps one of the funniest moments of the video is when Aaron Rowe of wired asks Justine of iJustine.TV, "Why? Would you like to come over and play doctor?" Although we'll admit you didn't have much time, try taking it a bit slower next time, Aaron. They can smell desperation -- even across the internet.

For those unfamiliar with Meebo.com, the site is a browser based instant messaging service for AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo IM, and more. The SpeedDate.com app on Meebo allows users to participate in SpeedDate sessions through Meebo.

Jooce: online desktop & computer replacement


There's a lot of you out there that use computers everywhere, making use of web-based services like Gmail, Google Reader, Pixenate, and Zoho. Here's something that'll help you organize your computing experience no matter what computer you use: Jooce, the online desktop. We covered the service back in August, but it's finally out of beta with old features refined and new ones to offer.

Jooce is web-based, meaning all you need is a computer with a web browser and a connection to the internet. Through Jooce, you can store unlimited files, share those files, access applications, email others, instant message, and more just like you would on a regular computer. The difference is that Jooce lets you do it anywhere on any computer and keeps the experience consistent. Other similar services exist from other companies such as Goowy and YouOS, which also emulate the desktop of a computer.

Jooce looks fairly easy to use and simulates the desktop computer experience pretty well. It's funded through the occasional, non-intrusive ad, so it's free to use. Future improvements include third party widgets from Widgetbox and Jooce's very own email client. The company was started by three friends from around the world who worked together at a Paris based NGO. The project took off in the wake of the United Nations sponsored World Summit on the Information Society.

YouTube adds cool visualization for browsing related videos

YouTube adds cool visualization for browsing related videosFor a while, YouTube was just, well, YouTube. Now under Google's wing, the popular video sharing site receives the random, occasional upgrade. Here's a new one: You can now browse videos related to the one you're watching through an interactive web-like interface.

In order to access the feature, first full-screen your chosen video. At the bottom left corner, next to the play/pause button, you should find the the new button. Click on it, and YouTube will take you on a cool, new related-video ride.

In testing the feature, we discovered that not all videos had the button. Further investigation led to the culprit: Videos that YouTube considers promoted content (YouTube is likely paid to promote these videos) don't have it. If for some reason a video or two doesn't have the button, fear not. Google has a habit of releasing gradual updates to its properties, so it shouldn't be too long until it becomes a site-wide feature for all videos.


Flock 1.0.3: Even wallflowers like social web browsers

Flock 1.0.3Flock, the social web browser, recently passed its milestone 1.0 release. If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Why aren't more people using Flock?

More importantly, why are we?

It's a good question. Strip Flock down and what you've got is a Firefox clone. You can do everything with Firefox that you can do with Flock, if you're inclined to add extension after extension. But when all is said and done, Flock is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Netvibes offers universal widget approach


Netvibes has been working on a way to give widget makers the ability to run their widgets on any widget platform, whether it's Vista, Mac Dashboard, Opera, iGoogle, or Windows Live. Now the fruit of their labor, the Universal Widget API, is in the wild, and it promises to increase exposure for widgeteers whose artful output was previously stunted because "it's not available for <x-widget-platform>".

Today, there are only about a thousand UWA-based widgets, but the number grows daily. Netvibes promises support for Yahoo Widgets in a forthcoming release, too. It makes us wonder if there's really such a thing as a killer widget, one that plays into the strengths of a particular desktop platform. Since most web widgets are RSS-based and limited in platform-specific functionality, we suspect most UWA widgets will be simplistic. So many widgets will likely still be limited to a particular platform, since they often have to talk to platform or app-specific applications in order to do their jobs, like, say an XBox remote control widget.

Rapleaf adds 'Hover and Discover'

The online reputation site Rapleaf provides a way for peers and previous business associates to contribute to an online reputation rating--the sort of thing the Better Business Bureau would've thought of if only they'd had a Web 2.0 nerd on staff. But since we first took a look at Rapleaf, the fellas from the Bay Area have added a new feature, something called "Hover and Discover".

When you hover over a Rapleaf attribute with the mouse pointer, Rapleaf will now show you where it got the information that makes up an element in your Rapleaf rating--whether it was gleaned from a social networking site such as MySpace or provided by a peer who claims to know you. Yeah, all these factors contribute to Rapleaf's estimation of your reputation, and now you can tell where the info actually came from. Useful... especially if Rapleaf got some detail wrong about you!

DOJ: No legislation for Network Neutrality

Along with the Web 2.0 movement came a huge push for Network Neutrality, a cause whose proponents demand that all access to the Internet occur as equally as possible. In other words, AT&T can't charge Google more to transfer a byte of data because Google has figured out a way to make more money off of AT&T's bandwidth than AT&T themselves can do.

Likewise, a cable Internet provider can't provide better bandwidth to users of its VoIP phone service than to non-using subscribers. That's the concept. The ideal? Make the Internet a great place for competing service providers to flourish.

In reality, Network Neutrality, or Netnoot, as some have taken to calling it, was a flawed concept from the beginning. DSL carriers already charge premium fees for preferential treatment by way of imposing often-arbitrary speed limits (768k DSL is more costly than 256k dsl, etc.) even when no technical reason exists to impose such limits. Plus, the big Internet providers who count among their customers gigantic bandwidth hogs like Google and MySpace are already gleaning more revenue from them than they are from Joe Bob's Bicycle Shop. So the folks who consume more already pay more. As such, consumers demand that, at least in matters of speed, the Internet be non-neutral.

Wise to these realities, the Department of Justice today announced that they will not be pursuing any further legislative attempts to regulate carrier activity on the Net. Good move. If people want to pay less for bandwidth or choose a different provider for phone service than for data access, they'll do it. We don't need laws to enforce what consumers already do.
