Rumor: Music labels want to create Hulu for music videos

MTV Music
There's been a lot of buzz over the last few days about how all of Warner Music Group's music videos have gone missing from YouTube. Now Alley Insider reports that Warner, BMG, EMI, and Universal are talking about building their own site for music videos.

The idea would be to create a single destination where be able to find music videos from popular artists. There's some reason to think the site could work. After all, Hulu has become one of the top destination for online video by providing full length, ad-supported streaming episodes of TV shows and movies with the cooperation of several major networks and studios.

On the other hand, there's a big difference between full length TV shows and music videos. Like, a 40 minute difference. Part of the reason Hulu has been successful is because it offers users something that wasn't already available: A single location where they could legally watch high quality movies and TV shows to their heart's content. But there are already plenty of places to find music videos, uploaded by the music labels or uploaded illegally by users.

As far as I can tell, the world isn't clamoring for a Hulu for music videos, because there already is one. And it's called YouTube.

That said, a few months ago MTV launched a new music video page which is actually a pretty good one stop shop for many popular music videos. Maybe the music labels should just work with MV>

Warner to create (semi) comprehensive music video website

Warner VideoWarner Music is working with Premium TV to create an online site featuring the record label's entire music video library. The service will be supported by advertising, and the videos will be available to stream for free. You'll be able to download videos for a fee.

While you can currently access some Warner content from the label's website, the deal would include Warner's entire library, plus previously unseen content.

As CD sales continue to decline and online video continues to grow in popularity, the move seems to make sense. But most music fans don't really associate artists with the labels they're on. In other words, even if Warner posts its complete catalog, there's a good chance you wont' find the artist you're looking for on Warner's site.

It'll be hard to compete with existing sites such as YouTube or MTV's Overdrive that have videos from multiple labels.

Last.fm's music library is about to get a lot bigger

Last.fmThe worlds fourth largest supplier of music, Warner Music Group, has announced yesterday that they will be releasing their entire music collection to use for all of you Last.fm users out there.

With over 15 million users, Last.fm has blown up over the past few years as one of the best social music sites on the net. With integration into digital media players on your computer, such as your iTunes player, Last.fm is able to learn the patters of music listeners. As the first of its kind, this Last.fm and Warner Music merger should prove helpful for both parties: Last.fm with its ad-based player and site should be getting a lot more hits, and Warner gaining the knowledge of how and what people are listening to. And with a lot of artists under their belt, Warner Music may be getting the better end of that deal in their hopes of making Warner something a bit more than the fourth largest supplier of music. I really like Last.fm and make daily use of their services with the Pandor/Last.fm mashup.

Warner Music taps Brightcove for embedded video

brighcove video technologyAll this talk about video lately is surely driving everyone video mad! This is a different kind of video news, a new partnership of sorts. Warner Music, one of those big record labels, has decided to use Brightcove's technology to embed music videos inside of its record label and musician web sites. Sire, Atlantic, and Electra are some of the labels that will be using the video technology to provide music videos and artist interviews on demand to visitors. Now, kicking this into a social space, MySpace, and social network fans will be able to easily add the videos to their pages. This new effort by Warner, is a way to keep track, and monitor video usage in the outside world. Well, outside of YouTube and other video sharing sites at least.

Content filtering in the works for YouTube

google youtube content filteringLooks like Google's new partners, Warner, Universal, and Sony, are pushing Google to develop a technology that allows copyright owners to search and locate their content and choose to whether they want remove it from YouTube. This new technology that is in development is said to be able to scan audio in mp3 or video and compare so-called electronic fingerprints. In order to make labels happy and avoid costly lawsuits, Google is going to have to implement this software, and prove to record labels that the YouTube service is going to make everyone happy.

Google shakes hands with Sony BMG, Warner for free music videos

Google shakes hands with Sony BMG, Warner for free music videosAh when the river of Google flows, it is plentiful. Not even sitting down for a breather, the big G has announced a deal with Sony BMG and Warner Music Group (yea, they shook hands with YouTube last week too) to bring "thousands" of free music videos to GooTube Google Video, thanks to their standard ad-supported model. They have plenty of videos linked front and center under their search box from big players like Madonna, Justin Timberlake and John Mayer, with a promise of more on the way.

It's going to be real interesting how all this Google Video, YouTube and copyright stuff pans out. Warner's aforementioned plan with YouTube showed some forward-thinking on the company's part to embrace these new distribution mediums instead of threatening them - it looks like these new post-YouTube acquisition deals, now with Sony on board, could be a sign of the times.

Warner to put thousands of music videos on YouTube

Warner loves YouTubeYouTube has made some surprising progress in its quest to host every music video ever created in a deal with Warner Music that will put the record giant's entire music video library online. This is in stark contrast to the recent legal threats by Universal against YouTube regarding copyright. The Warner deal gives YouTube users access to the music videos plus the green light to remix those videos with their own content. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Warner and YouTube will be sharing advertising revenue.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
