Windows Pager creates Linux-like virtual desktops in Windows

Windows Pager
There are plenty of applications that will let Windows users work in virtual desktops. And Windows Pager is one of them. But it has a few nice features that make it worth checking out. First of all, like Desktops and VirtuaWin, Windows Pager lets you create several virtual desktops, which lets you open and arrange programs in different workspaces and then flip back and forth between them as needed.

Windows Pager also creates 4 little icons in the Windows taskbar that indicate what's going on in each desktop. You can right click on the edge of any program window or on the taskbar icon for a program to move it from one desktop to another or to mark it as something that should be visible in each workspace.

The open source program can be run as an executable file (no installation necessary), which means you can throw it on a USB flash drive and use it on any computer. It also weighs in at just over 500KB, so it won't take up much space at all on that flash drive.

The download link for Windows Pager wasn't working when I tried it this afternoon, so you may want to download the app from Download.com instead.

VirtuaWin: Virtual desktop manager for Windows

VirtualWinIf you've spent any time using Linux, you're probably familiar with the idea of virtual desktops. Instead of spending money on multiple monitors, many Linux distributions include a virtual desktop manager that lets you display certain running applications, icons, and other goodies on one screen at a time. You can toggle back and forth between desktops to get the powerful feeling that you have unlimited desktop space.

VirtuaWin is an open source application that brings the same functionality to Windows. And then some. This utility has far too many features to list, but here are a few of the most important ones:
  • Configurable hotkeys for switching between desktops
  • Configurable tray icon for displaying your current desktop location
  • Option to switch desktops by holding your mouse near the edge of the screen
  • Easily switch running applications from one desktop to another by clicking on the tray icon
VirtuaWin 4.0 beta 2 was released this week with a few bug fixes. Version 4.0 also removes all limits on the number of virtual windows you can have open, although the window list menu can only display 255 windows. But seriously, were you planning on using 256?

Expand your desktop space with 360desktop - DLS interview

Ever wish your PC desktop was just a little bit bigger? Need more space for program shortcuts, documents, and temporary files? There are a number of ways to virtually increase the size of your desktop by creating multiple virtual desktops. Microsoft has a free power toy that lets you toggle between up to 4 desktops. Dexpot is a freeware program that lets you have up to 20. And virtual desktops are built into many Linux distributions.

But what if you don't want a separate desktop? You just need one, but you'd like it to b wider than say, your 17-inch monitor. That's where 360desktop comes in.

360desktop launches in private beta today. The application takes a new approach toward virtual desktops., Rather than toggling between desktops, 360desktop lets you expand your existing workspace past the edge of your monitor. You can either hover your mouse near the edge of the screen or use a pull-down navigation panel, which results in much quicker and smoother scrolling.

The program takes a panoramic photo and lets you treat it as an extended background. True to 360Destkop's name, your desktop is treated as a big circle. Scroll far enough and you'll wind up right back where you started.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
