Off the Clock: RealPlayer SP downloads and converts web videos (even SFW ones!)

Believe me, I'm as shocked as anyone to be writing this post, but RealPlayer SP ships with a substantially reduced amount of suck compared to previous versions. Yes, the new version sucks so much less that I'm actually ok with using it to download and convert web video.

There are still glimpses of the past, of course. The installer does offer a toolbar (at least it's Google and not Ass...er, Ask). It also offers the pro version and a 14 day trial of something, but I can't tell you specifically what it was. Instead of reading, I quickly located the "leave me the hell alone" button and closed the screen.

SUPER video player and encoder releases 2009 version

The powerful, versatile, and free video encoding and playback app SUPER has released a new version that adds tons of new functionality to the already powerful application.

If you're not familiar with the program, it's based on Open Source projects like FFMpeg, libavcodec, MPlayer, and MEncoder and can play or convert just about any video file - even to formats for the Nintendo DS and PSP.

While the "everything on one page" interface hasn't changed, a number of new encoding and play features have been added or improved, like WMV9, FLAC, and OGG support.

One downside to SUPER is the horribly constructed website. There's not a clear location for the download, so I'll save you some hassle: go to this page, press your end key and look for Download SUPER @ setup file.

Free Video Converter offers simple video editing, conversion

Free Video Converter
There are plenty of free Windows applications that let you convert files from one format to another (for example, from MPG to H.264). And judging by its name, you'd think that Free Video Converter was just another of those apps. But the free utility also offers basic video editing capabilities.

You won't find any fades, transitions, or titles in Free Video Converter. But the program does let you make quick and dirty edits by selecting the frames of any video that you want to include or exclude. Just choose whether you want to select or deselect frames, drag your mouse over the timeline, and click the export button.

When it comes to video conversion, Free Video Converter can handle a number of popular file formats including AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, RM, QT, and WMV using popular codecs like XviD and H.264. There are also presets for YouTube, iPod, iPhone, HDTV, and Flash videos for the web.

Clone2Go: Batch video converter for Windows

Clone2GoClone2Go is a video conversion utility for Windows that accepts videos in a variety of formats (including WMV, MPG, MP4, or 3GP), and includes at least as many output options. What sets Clone2Go apart from some other video converters out there is that it makes batch video conversion a snap. Just add as many files to the queue as you like and click the start button to begin an encoding job. You can even configure Clone2Go to shutdown your computer when it's done.

Another nice feature is Clone2Go's integrated web video downloader. You can grab videos from YouTube or Google Video just by entering a URL. There's also a built in video player, which lets you watch videos you've downloaded or converted.

Clone2Go is available as a free download. There are also commercial versions which includes additional conversion profiles for iPods, Zunes, and 3GP phones, as well as the ability to rip DVDs or save your custom configurations.

Filsh.Net Converts Web Video For Playback Anywhere

Plenty of good software exists for capturing audio or video from YouTube and other such sites, but I'm always on the look for portable apps or web services that offer the same features.

Filsh.net offers an extremely easy-to-use way to convert clips before downloading. It's so easy, in fact, that I barely noticed the German interface whilst creating a Nintendo-DS compatible version of some kid setting his pants on fire. Nice!

Drop in your target URL and select your desired format from options including AVI, MPG, MP4, DPG (the DS format), 3GP, OGG, or MP3 and Filsh goes to work. Multiple sites are supported, including YouTube, Google Video, Break, MyspaceTV, and Veoh. I was unable to grab from Vimeo, but Filsh does support uploading - so I could save a clip first and then send it back up to Filsh for conversion.

Conversions are fairly fast, and I didn't notice any quality problems. Videos remained clear, and audio extracted from clips to MP3 sounded just as good as the original.

Filsh works well, and though it doesn't handle the variety of conversions that Zamzar does it's still a useful site to keep in your bookmarks.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
