Omnisio: online video editing with YouTube and others

omnisio add video
Omnisio is a free web-based video editor that lets you snip and paste videos from YouTube, Google Video, and blip.tv, with support for more sites coming soon. The site is similar to online photo-editing sites like FotoFlexer, but applies the same idea to video. You don't need any desktop software other than a sturdy online browser with Flash support.

The three sites still provide for a very large library to choose from, and you could always add your own videos to a YouTube account should you need some extra content. We can see Omnisio being very useful for all types presentations -- professional or student related -- in which the subject is heavily documented on those video sites (what subject isn't heavily documented on YouTube?).

We can also see the online video-editing service spawning a whole new breed of online-content-remixers, which traditionally take funny and interesting videos, pictures, etc. to turn them into into (what's supposed to be) funnier but fairly stupid creations that usually make fun of the subject and gain mass notoriety. Thank you, Omnisio, for helping us clutter the Internet with even more Star Wars Kid edits.

Final Cut Express 4 released

Apple has just released the newest version of the Final Cut Express: Final Cut Express 4. The program touts similar featureset upgrades as NLE big bro, Final Cut Studio 2.0, including AVCHD support (for Intel Macs only) and the Open Format Timeline. With the Open Format Timeline, users can edit both HD (in either 720p or 1080i) and SD footage within the same project -- and in realtime -- without having to manually recrop or convert footage.

When iMovie '08 was released in August, a lot of iMovie users reacted with disgust (to the point that Apple continues to offer free iMovie HD 6 downloads for new iLife '08 buyers), because the program was a seen as a step back in terms of advanced features. Final Cut Express 4 should appeal to those users, not only because of its support for iMovie '08 project files, but also because at $199 ($99 for upgrades), the product is $100 less than Final Cut Express 3.5.

YouTube launches online video editing tools

YouTube Remixer
YouTube has launched a new online video editing tool called YouTube Remixer. If you've got a cheap digital camera, you're pretty much ready to upload home movies to YouTube. But if Final Cut or even Windows Movie Maker aren't your cup of tea, YouTube's new features let you do all the basics online.

YouTube Remixer lets you add text, graphics, or audio to your videos. You can also create transitions between scenes in your video.

The feature looks a lot like Photobucket's "Remix" feature, which shouldn't be surprising since they share more than a name. Both are powered by Adobe Premiere Express. If you need a serious editing tool, look elsewhere (and don't really expect to find any satisfactory online solution), but for a quick nip and tuck, YouTube Remixer is a nice addition to the online video site.

Apple announces Final Cut Studio 2

Engadget had live coverage of the Apple keynote taking place at NAB. Here's what was announced in the world of software:

Final Cut Server: Media asset management, workflow automation, automated encode and publish. It includes a cross platform interface so PC users aren't left out of the game. Cost is $999 for 10 concurrent users, $1999 for unlimited concurrent users. It will be available this summer.

Final Cut Studio 2: Includes Final Cut Pro 6, Compressor 3, Motion 3 and Soundtrack Pro 2. There's also a new kid included in the FCS2 family, Color, which provides real time application color grading. Color is the result of Apple's acquisition of FinalTouch. The cost of FCS2 stays at $1299. Current Final Cut Studio users can upgrade for $499, and users with any older version of Final Cut Pro can upgrade for $699.

There's a member of the Final Cut Studio family that was not mentioned, DVD Studio Pro. It is still included in FCS2, but the Apple store lists it as version 4, which is the current version. The Apple store was down for a bit, as usual, but it's back online and you can order FCS2 right now, but it won't ship until May.

Cuts : A first look at remixing the video web

Last week we told you about Cuts; a web 2.0 service which lets you remix YouTube and Myspace videos. Download Squad got its hot little hands on a beta ticket for the new service and today, I eagerly jumped in to take the virtual razor blade to a few YouTube videos.

Cuts' captioning is a pretty addictive idea; Like filtering Web 2.0 through VH1's Pop-Up-Video. I'm ashamed to tell you how much time I spent making the video above. I'm also sad to say I can't manage much enthusiasm for Cuts' other features.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
