PointUI comes to Windows Mobile 2003, VGA devices

PointUITired of staring at your Windows Mobile phone or PDA's home screen and application menus? PointUI is a lightweight and free application that completely changes the way you interact with Windows Mobile devices.

PointUI launched earlier this year, but initially the software only ran on Windows Mobile 5.0 and newer devices with 320 x 240 pixel displays. But now the developers have released two public alpha versions. One is designed to run on Windows Mobile 2003 devices, while the other works with WM5.0/6 devices that have VGA displays. While we were able to run the WM2003 version on a Dell Axim X50v PDA with a 640 x 480 pixel display, we wouldn't recommend repeating our experiment. This WM2003 version is s-l-o-w on VGA devices. It seems rather zippy on QVGA displays though.

So what exactly does PointUI do? It provides an easy to use interface with large finger-friendly buttons and pretty screen transitions. PointUI is also customizable, allowing you to bookmark the applications you use most. We're not really convinced that PointUI makes it easier or quicker to perform day to day tasks on a Windows Mobile phone or PDA. But it cetainly is pretty to look at.

Skype 2.7 beta for Mac released: Now with Leopard support

Skype 2.7 Skype has released a new build of Skype 2.7 beta for Mac. Probably the most important feature in the latest release is support for OS X 10.5 Leopard. But it looks like the Skype team is also continuing its march toward feature parity across the Mac, Linux, and PC versions of the popular internet telephony software.

A few months ago Skype launched high-res video support for video chat using the Windows client. When we say high-res, we don't mean HDTV resolutions, we're just talking plain old 640 x 480 pixel VGA resolution. But that's still a much sharper image than you'll get using the Linux or Mac versions of Skype, which only support 320 x 240 pixels.

Skype 2.7 beta for Mac is the first OS X build to support VGA video at 25 frames per second. If you've got a slower internet connection, you can also adjust your video settings.

We're guessing it'll be a while before we see VGA support for the Linux client, since Skype just got around to adding video to Skype 2.0 beta for Linux last month.

Skype 3.6 beta includes high quality video support

Skype 3.6 betaSkype has released a public beta of Skype 3.6. As usual you can expect a bunch of bug fixes and general tweaks. But there's also one major new feature: support for high quality video chats.

What do we mean by high quality? 640 x 480 resolution and 30 frames per second. You'll need a broadband connection and a webcam capable of 640 x 480 resolutions in order to make high quality video calls. Otherwise, you can always resort to and old fashioned 320 x 240 window displaying video at 15 frames per second.

While this is the first version of Skype to officially support VGA video chats, there's been a hack for enabling high quality video since February.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
