ShrinkFile online file zipper: Some apps don't need to go web 2.0

ShrinkFile
Google, Zoho, 37signals and other companies have done an excellent job of demonstrating that some applications don't need to be desktop based. In fact, web-based calendars, office applications, and chat services offer many advantages over desktop versions like easy collaboration without the need for an Exchange server. But some applications really make a lot more sense on the desktop. Case in point: ShrinkFile.

ShrinkFile is an online file compression and hosting service. Have a large file you want to share with a friend or colleague and want to save them a bit of downloading time? Upload it to ShrinkFile, and ShrinkFile will zip it and host it for free for up to a week.

Sure, ShrinkFile could come in handy if you're on a computer that doesn't have WinZip, 7-zip, or another archiving application. But you know what? Practically every major operating system available today ships with the ability to zip files. What's more, you could save time both downloading and uploading your large file if you just zip it before sharing it using another service like FileDropper or YouSendit.

What do you think? Am I missing something, or is ShrinkFile basically useless?

Useless $1000 iPhone app disappears - did Apple remove it?

It looks like Apple has removed one of the most talked-about iPhone apps in its app store. The app doesn't do chat, it doesn't connect you to any web services, and it doesn't even let you enter any text. It's called I Am Rich, and it does absolutely nothing. The price tag? A reasonable $999.99. Apparently having its red gem icon on your iPhone's home screen is supposed to bring you a grand worth of prestige.

When this app was first discovered, there was an immediate flurry of folks wondering how it got past Apple's screening process. Although I can't find any comment from Apple, and the app's creator hasn't updated his website, the app store link to I Am Rich no longer works. I wonder whether the author made any sales before it was removed. At around $100 to develop, a single sale would leave him with 10 times what he put in.

Useless software - Freaky Friday Find

useless softwareNot one, but three pieces of strangeness today. Three "useless" apps. The first might be useful, as it is one of those handy hex color pickers. The next is a useless name generator, for those of you too lazy (or busy?) to think of fake names on your own. It won't create classics like I.C. Weiner or anything, but it's cute nonetheless. And the last is my personal favorite: Useless. I'll let the author speak for his work, "The award-winning Useless™ does absolutely nothing better and faster than the competition! And as it looks cyberpunkish, so you can also use it to impress your wannabe hacker friends." Did I mention these were all done with Visual Basic? Spiffy.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
