How-To : Cram a 500Kva UPS through a fourth floor window

It takes a lot of power to run a modern data center, and for reliability that power needs to be clean, and stable. So what do you do when you need to install a monstrosity of a UPS on the fourth floor of an historic building?

You take out the windows, and hire a crane. This UPS installation is definitely not plug and play. Taking 15 hours, and a heck of a lot of manpower, it just goes to show how much our power needs have changed, and what lengths we're willing to go to for the sake of our beloved office network.

We're just glad we aren't the ones footing the bill.

New UPS feature lets you redirect packages over the web

UPS It's 3:00 in the morning, and after pulling your hair out all night, you realize that the reason you can't get that program to run is that you need more RAM. A few seconds later you've got 4GB of memory shipping from Newegg. And then you remember that you entered your home address for shipping but you'll be at work when the box arrives.

Up until now, you had to wait until UPS put a sticker on your door saying they tried to make a delivery while you weren't home before you can deal with the problem. But now the company has rolled out UPS Intercept, a service that lets you, well, intercept packages while they're in transit.

Through the UPS Intercept page you can request:
  • return to sender
  • deliver to another address
  • reschedule delivery
  • have the package held at a UPS location for pickup
UPS will not explain to your wife why you just blew your savings on memory for your computer so that you could play Doom.

PackageMapper: Google Maps for UPS/FedEx/USPS routes

PackageMapperIt was really the inevitable Google Maps hack: PackageMapper uses Google Maps to draw a map of your incoming package's route, and works for UPS, FedEx, and USPS. Even neater, it can show you the routes for many packages at once so you get an at-a-glance view of where your  packages are. Now if only there were a service that would do this in real-time (i.e. how far is the truck away from my house right now?)

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
