Thailand withdraws YouTube lawsuit

Thai King The will they or won't they flirtation between Thailand and Google continues, with Thailand dropping it's lawsuit against YouTube after Google agreed to remove offensive video clips.

When users began to upload videos mocking the king of Thailand, officials blocked access to YouTube in that country. After a series of talks, Google executives believed they'd reached a solution, offering to block access to the offensive videos from within Thailand. Removing the videos entirely wouldn't do much good, they said, because users would just upload more videos.

Apparently that wasn't good enough, because last week Thailand filed a lawsuit against Google, which was apparently enough to convince the company to just take down the videos. 12 videos have been removed so far.

YouTube faces a new round of lawsuits

Daily Show YouTubeViacom was just the beginning. Sure, the parent company of MTV and Comedy Central sued the bejesus out of YouTube for $1 billion in copyright infringement. But did you really think other entities would stay out of the action?

The Football Association Premier League is threatening legal action, as is the country of Thailand.

The Premiere League is ticked off at YouTube for the usual copyright infringing stuff. They say the video-sharing site is violating the league's distribution rights of soccer matches, and have set up a website to encourage other copyright holders to join their suit against YouTube's parent company Google.

As for Thailand, they're upset about video clips that made fun of the country's king. Thailand banned access to YouTube, and the site eventually agreed to block pages with the offensive videos from Thai users. While it seemed like that would be the end of the story, a Thai official now says the country plans to file a suit against Google.

Maybe this wasn't the best time for Google to start paying independent video producers. They might need to save the money.

Google will work with Thailand to censor YouTube videos

Thailand videoIt looks like Google is working with Thai officials to bring YouTube back to Thailand. Government officials had blocked access to YouTube earlier after users had posted a video mocking the country's king.

The video in question showed an picture of King Bhumibol Adulyadej superimposed with images, including a pair of women's feet. The users removed the video after the government ban was put in place.

Now Google has agreed to help Thailand limit access to individual videos that the government finds offensive. Rather than removing the videos entirely, the videos will not be viewable in Thailand. Google officials say that removing single videos might not have helped, as users would be able to upload the files again.

Since the original clip was posted, several other videos designed to insult the Thai leader have been posted on YouTube.
