Cadence lets you set the tempo of your iPhone's tunes

Cadence is an iPhone app that creates custom playlists from your iTunes library, each set to a different tempo. If you're a runner, a DJ, or just someone who likes to keep everything going to the beat, it's worth a look. To use Cadence, you'll have to download a small Mac desktop app that automatically finds the tempos of the songs in your library. Scanning takes time, but you only have to do it once.

When the scan is through, one click will automatically create playlists (20 songs each, when I tried it) at various tempos. Sync them to your iPhone and you're ready to go. Opening the Cadence iPhone app lets you slide a metronome until you find the beat that matches, then let go and start moving to hear music that matches your rhythm. Download it on the iTunes App Store here.

BPM Analyzer gives you the tempo of all of your MP3s

BPM AnalyzerCreating playlists can be tedious, and every bit of information can help. While some people maintain the ID3 tags in their MP3 files in excruciating detail, others (like me) can't seem to find the time. But when it comes to finding the tempo, no amount of manual ID3 tag maintenance will help.

If you're trying to put together a playlist that contains songs that are a similar speed, knowing the beats-per-minute of each song is immensely helpful. Luckily, there is a free download called BPM Analyzer from MixMeister that will analyze all of your MP3 tracks, and update the ID3 tags in them with exact BPM information. With that done, it's a simple matter of sorting your music library by the beats-per-minute field.

Now you can put together an upbeat energy-boosting playlist full of fast songs, a mellow playlist with slower songs, or pretty much anything you desire. And for the nerds like me, it's just another piece of information to sort and group your music by.

BPM Analyzer is available on both the Windows and Mac operating system.

Find the right music for your workout with Beatscanner

Making the right workout mix is all about tempo. If you're going for a run and you want to bring music that matches your personal pace, Beatscanner can help. It automatically detects the beats per minute of songs in your music library, and makes playlists of songs at the pace you want. It was originally built in 2007, and the developer just started updating his blog again earlier this year, so the app's design is still a little bit old-school, to put it politely.

If you're not satisfied with the songs you have, there's also a premium version of sorts, called Repacer. Instead of just finding songs that are the right tempo, it changes the pace of your existing songs to match the BPM you're looking for. That way, you don't have to worry about your favorite songs being too fast or too slow to work out to.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
