A cloud of fluffy words from Wordle

Tag clouds are a great way to visualize content. Sites like Flickr, del.icio.us as well as a little blog called Download Squad use clouds. The larger the word, the more popular it is compared to the rest.

Now what if you wanted a cloud of your very own? One way to go about this is to enlist the help of Wordle. Put in a bunch of words or enter your del.icio.us user name and based on the information you've provided Wordle will generate a cloud for you.

The clouds generated by Wordle are for display purposes only. You won't be able to click on a word and have it go to a particular site. It's just mainly for fun. And you got to admit, a bunch of words all mashed together looks rather interesting.

Gifttagging - tag things you want, and hope someone gets them for you

tag things you want with gifftaggingHow do we look at this site. As a way to greedily store information on things you want, or a way for friends and family to check in and see what items you might find useful when special occasions roll around?

Gifttagging is a way that users can tag items they want to have, hoping that friends and family can find some great gift ideas. It's also a way to meet and interact with people that have the same tastes. Part social network, part shopcasting. The front page of the site shows off the most popular tags people have used, with recent gifts that people posted. Getting setup is as easy as entering your name, email, and user name. When adding new items to your profile choose a name, price, drop in a URL where the product can be found, tag it, and choose 'scan image' to see if the system can find a picture for you. Gifttagging also offers a browser add on to make it easier to bookmark your wants.

There, now you're done and ready to send your shopping profile link to family and friends!

This service is similar to Mypicklist or ThisNext.

Flickr photos now in Yahoo search

flickr photos in yahooSo now that Yahoo owns Flickr why not integrate all these crazy, top notch, up to the second, newsworthy photos into Yahoo's image search? It only makes sense.

We wrote about this happening, and it's taken quite a while to do, but Yahoo has finally included Flickr photos in its queried search results. When images are uploaded to Flickr accounts worldwide and tagged, Yahoo gains access to these additions via a live feed from the Flickr service. When users then search in Yahoo, Flickr images will be marked with a Flickr account name. Searchers can then choose to view and search all photos by that particular user.

So as long as images are tagged correctly, they should start showing up in searches on Yahoo's Image Search.

LeapTag, RSS by tags

leaptag rssLeapTag is a new way to discover all of the content you are interested in. Its way to read RSS feeds that enables users to locate news, blogs, books and other sources of material that match personal interests. However, it is not an RSS feed reader.

Users can sign up and download a browser toolbar. Through this toolbar you subscribe to tags and topics. LeapTag then scowers the web and finds links that you might like. The system learns by how much you like the items, and improves the results it lays out.

The download for this application is quite heavy, and it is still in beta form so things could change. Not only does LeapTag require a browser based toolbar with a new sidebar, but it also requires a Windows or Mac application to keep things running. For an alternative check out StumbleUpon or Del.icio.us.

This new Firefox add-on is oh so del.icio.us

delicious firefox addonOur favorite online bookmarking tool, del.icio.us, has just announced the release of a hot new Firefox add-on. Ok, so it's not too hot, apparently del.icio.us quietly released this one to the public a little while ago but just decided now to update it and let everyone know about it now.

The del.icio.us Firefox add-on allows users to create, manage, and search all bookmarks right in the browser bar. The big noticeable change is the speed. del.icio.us has bumped up the power and greatly increased the rate at which bookmarks can be made, read and accessed. Users now have full control over their synced del.icio.us accounts with tagging abilities inside Firefox.

del.icio.us is a great way to store all of you bookmarks in one location that can be accessed anywhere you are. This is a great improvement that old users are going to be thankful for, and will hopefully encourage more people to try their great bookmarking service out. Check out the tour of the new features here.

del.icio.us users hit a high note

delicious social bookmarkingThe team at del.icio.us made a quiet announcement last week--so quiet that Download Squad didn't even hear it. It seems that the beginning of February saw the 1.5 millionth user register on the social bookmarking site. Apparently since the Yahoo! buyout the team is bursting at the seams trying to integrate with Yahoo!'s user base. The del.icio.us team hasn't made a post on their official blog since December 2006 to inform us as to what they have been up to or give us possible hints at what's to come with the service, but del.icio.us creator Joshua Schachter ensures us that they have a lot going on and a lot more changes are in store for the future. To start with, del.icio.us is working to improve the UI and flush out any hidden design issues from way back in the day. del.icio.us is still trying hard to figure out what the future of the tool is, but I'm sure it will make any bookmarker happy. I use del.icio.us every single day to store, manage, archive and share bookmarks. It's a powerful yet simple tool that, after reading Schachter's comments, I'm sure will grow to new heights this year.

Geesee I like to chat

geesee embedded chatGeesee is straight out of Slovakia with some startup pocket money, and an embeded online address free communication service. Geesee combines web chat that is topic based, tag searching, and widgets that connect into a central network of chat rooms. Geesee can be accessed through widgets on websites, which would be a direct embedded conduit to a chat area about that specific sites contents. From there users have multiple tabbed chat areas in which they can anonymously chat in. No need in searching the web for individuals with similar interests, just access if through your favorite websites that have the Geesee widget. Geesee is currently in development with beta testing launching October 2006, and full launch in November. You can sign up to become a beta tester on their website.

Deliwin: access your del.icio.us bookmarks from the system tray

Deliwin - del.icio.us bookmark menu for Windows
As a Mac OS X user, I've written about Delibar, a del.icio.us bookmarks menu for the menubar, over on TUAW a few times now. But wouldn't it be great if somebody ported it to Windows, so PC users could join in on the fun?

Ask and ye shall receive, boys and girls. Deliwin is a Windows port of Delibar, allowing access to your del.icio.us bookmarks via the system tray. One of the nice features of Delibar/Deliwin is that these apps will obey a tag hierarchy; the first tag on a bookmark will be displayed as its top-level directory, while the second tag will act as a sub-directory. This might cause some del.icio.us users to retool the way they tag their bookmarks, but I welcomed the change and quickly became used to the advantages this brought to my tag labeling and organization paradigms.

Deliwin is donationware and available from the author's site.

FlickrTagFight!

flickrtagfightWant to see the age-old duels truly settled once and for all? Coke vs Pepsi? Apple vs PC? Cat vs dog? Well, maybe nothing actually gets settled, but FlickrTagFight does a great job of pitting two Flickr tags side by side, counting their ranks and showing you samples of each. You can enter your own choice of two tags, select from the most popular fights (man vs woman, anyone?) or check out the latest fights going down. Yet another cool Flickr toy.

Featured Time Waster

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
