Deja vu all over again: tab previews are back in Firefox 3.6

Now that Firefox 3.5 has made it into the mainstream, Mozilla is plugging away at browser.next. In last night's addition to the 3.6 nightly builds, some old-but-new tab features have finally made an appearance in Mozilla's browser.

Originally slated for 3.0, then bumped to 3.5, then bumped again, tab previews are back in Firefox 3.6. To activate the feature, you'll need to jump into your about:config and search for browser.ctrlTab.previews. Double click the entry to set its value to true, and the result is what you see above.

Your last six tabs are displayed in a floating window, with a button below that allows viewing of all open tabs (screenshot after the break).

What's in store for Firefox 3.1

Ctrl Tab
Sure, Mozilla is preparing to release the final version of Firefox 3.0 next week. But that doesn't mean the development team is going to take a break anytime soon. You can take an early look at some of the features that will be included in the next version of Firefox. Here are a few of the things planned for Firefox 3.1:
  • A new visual tab switching feature will work like the Alt+Tab switching feature in Windows Vista (in other words, you can see thumbnails of open tabs). If you want to check out this feature before it's officially added to Firefox, you can download the Ctrl+Tab extension for Firefox 3.0 now.
  • Download history will be added to Places.
  • Support for bulk bookmark tagging and tag autocompletion
Firefox 3.1 alpha is scheduled for a mid-July release.

Coming soon to Firefox 3: tab previews

Firefox3 tab preview
While Mozilla may not have officially released Firefox 3 beta yet, that hasn't kept us from drooling over some hot new features in the next generation of the popular web browser. The new places bookmark manager, for one is pretty sweet. And Mozilla Links points out another feature that may or may not make it into the official release: a new tab preview feature that works like Alt+Tab on Windows machines.

With Firefox 2, you can switch between tabs by hitting Ctrl+Tab. You can also see a list of open tabs by hitting a little arrow on the right side of your tab menu bar.

The new extension (which is currently experimental, but which might wind up in the final release of Firefox 3), replaces that little button with a black box. Click on it and thumbnail images of all your open windows will pop up over a black screen. If you hit Ctrl+Tab, you'll get an Alt+Tab style window on the center of your Firefox screen, letting you scroll through your open tabs without actually scrolling through your open tabs.

In the grand scheme of things, the advanced tab switching application might not actually save you any time. But it sure looks pretty.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
