US Android users can finally have their Cupcake and eat it too

If you've been waiting for all the goodies in the Android 1.5 release (titled Cupcake), wait no longer. According to the T-Mobile forums, the rollout officially began a few days ago.

If you aren't the patient kind, AndroidGuys shows you how you can take a few minutes and do the upgrade yourself without waiting for T-Mobile to initiate it for you.

The most highly anticipated feature in Android 1.5 is the on-screen keyboard. I've been using a hacked pre-release 1.5 version for a few weeks and I can say that on-screen typing is definitely as useful as I always thought it would be.

Other niceties in 1.5 include video recording (bringing G1 users up to spec with iPhone and Curve counterparts) some updates to the camera (blurry photos no more!) and a few simple visual enhancements which make you wonder why they weren't there all along.

Viva la Googlephone!

T-Mobile Dash Windows Mobile 6 update leaked

WM6 dashCan't wait for T-Mobile to offer its official Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Dash smartphone? Better hit up those torrent trackers, because it looks like the ROM upgrade has been unofficially released to the wild.

The update includes all the Windows Mobile 6 goodies you'd expect, plus a couple of new surprises, including a Music Plug-In that lets you add a music player to your home screen, a new email setup program.

The upgrade takes about 10 minutes to complete. But again, we'll point out that the official release should be coming within the next week or two. So if you can hold out a few days, you're probably better off waiting for the supported upgrade, you know, in case you accidentally turn your PDA into a brick installing this update and void your warranty in the process. If your warranty is already expired, have fun!

Why you need the T-Mobile Connection Manager

T-Mobile
For anyone who uses the T-Mobile wi-fi HotSpot service inside Starbucks, Kinkos, airports, and other places, this little free download comes in handy. I use the HotSpot service quite a bit, and generally it is pretty reliable, at least the Starbucks I frequent have it working well. For the first time the service continued to kick me off every few minutes for some reason. I use the Windows Zero Configuration wireless networking service, since it is often easier to use and requires no intervention on my part.

Not very happy with the quality of service at the moment, I downloaded the lightweight T-Mobile Connection Manager client. These proprietary clients are a dime a dozen, heck every wi-fi card maker has their own. This one isn't anything special except it did actually make my connection stay on and not drop me after I installed it. The client also manages any access point you might have nearby, including EDGE/GPRS and VPN networks. Why it works better, I don't know exactly, but it does. If you use the T-Mobile service in Starbucks or elsewhere, I recommend it. Less frustration equals happy bloggers. We don't want no mad and road-raging bloggers. That would be messy.

Free T-Mobile HotSpot for Vista users

T-Mobile free hotspotStep right up and claim your latte, oh and some free wi-fi. If you use Windows Vista that is. As a promotion, the 90 days of free HotSpot access will begin tomorrow (January 26th, 2007). Usually T-Mobile charges $30/month for unlimited HotSpot access including just about every Starbucks, Kinkos, some hotels and airport clubs, and the price is $20/month for T-mobile wireless subscribers. The only requirement for the 90 days free wireless is that you have Vista installed. Go enjoy some free wi-fi on T-Mobile, the service is generally very good, and by good I mean reliable, good connection, decent speed, and so on and so forth. I use it to write many of my posts you see here on Download Squad from an undisclosed Starbucks.

Keep tabs on your mobile minutes in Firefox

TMobile Minutes Used ExtensionWinston Huang has written a pair of great extensions for Firefox that help you keep tabs on how many minutes you have left on your mobile phone. They're the Verizon Minutes Used Extension and the TMobile MInutes Used Extension. Each of them shows you right in your status bar how many minutes you've used and how many you have left, and hovering over it will give you more information like a projection of how many minutes you'll use this month. Brilliant!

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
