Happy SysAdmin Day!

As we all marvel at the miracle of modern technology today (you're soaking in it right now), let's raise a glass to your local System Administrator: the guy or gal or team who keep the servers humming and the network intact and safe. Have a happy SysAdmin day today, the 10th anniversary of the "event," and take your IT crew out to lunch or something.

Here's a gallery of sysadmin pics we found on the internet, but feel free to share your own in the comments or tag a Flickr photo "downloadsquad" and it'll appear in our tag pool.

Desktop Central packages 11 handy tools for sysadmins

Manage Engine develop a number of excellent products for network administrators. Even better, some of their tools - like Desktop Central - are completely free.

Desktop Central is a handy application that packages several useful utilities for sysadmins, including remote task management, software inventory, remote command prompt, wake on lan, and remote shutdown/restart. Reporting tools (users/groups, disk space, inventory) support exporting their results to CSV or plain text.

The tools are most useful in a domain setting, though several of them will work just fine in a workgroup setup as well.

Desktop Central is free, but you will have to put up with an advertisement for Manage Engine's enterprise software on the main screen. It's a minor distraction, and doesn't appear elsewhere.

Three apps for the Windows sysadmin - Holiday Gift Guide

Hyena
If you have a Windows systems admin (the kind of person responsible for managing a computer network and/or server farm) on your holiday gift-giving list, check out these three commercial apps that they are sure to love:

Hyena also makes it easy to quickly view the currently logged in users of a machine and shutdown or reboot a group of computers.

How could we forget ; Happy System Administrator's Day

We've been reminded that it's System Administrator's Day. Ok, reminded isn't the way to put it. We were attacked brutally by our hosting / content management staff with admonishment about how we never buy them flowers or candy anymore.

So, for all the system administrators out there, happy sys admin day. If you do your job well, what you do day-to-day goes largely unnoticed, and that's a talent that the modern world couldn't function without. Download Squad raises a glass to you, and we'd like to thank the hardworking staff which keeps Download Squad humming along in effortless perfection for all they do; Even if we don't send you flowers anymore.

Ten tools for every admin

USB
keyOkay, we've seen plenty of lists of apps for every user, or every Windows user, or every Mac user. But what about the sysadmins? This list of 10 tools for every admin is a good start, if very Windows-centric. The list is a bit different than it might have been a few years ago, with now-essential tools like a virtual CD app, VMWare or Virtual PC, a USB key, and even an RSS reader making the cut. Okay, admins, what tools did the author miss that you couldn't live without?

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
