Add subtitles to YouTube vids with Subyo

Sometimes we find ourselves watching funny YouTube videos in a language we don't understand, and we feel like we're missing part of the joke. What did he say, and why did she drop that on his head? Maybe we'll find out now, thanks to Subyo. It's a service that lets you create your own subtitled translations of YouTube videos, and search for subtitles submitted by others (by entering a video's YouTube URL, naturally.)

The downfall of sites like these isn't the functionality -- Subyo works just fine, and we finally figured out what the rappers were saying in some of those music videos -- it's the challenge of getting widespread user adoption. The site's only as good as its users, so it will be interesting to see whether Subyo catches on and becomes an essential add-on to YouTube.

SubDownloader finds subtitles for your movies

Whether you're pro-subtitles, anti-subtitles, or subtitle agnostic, we can all agree on one thing: subtitles are hard to find over the internet. Often you have to visit a number of sites or forums to find the right subtitles for the movie in question.

SubDownloader, a free program written in Python, aims to ease that quest by providing an easy way to download and view subtitles with your movies.

The program is very straightforward: select an individual movie file (DIVX,MPEG,AVI,etc) or a folder where a number of movie files are located, and SubDownloader will automatically find the available subtitles for that movie.

If you want to watch the movie with the subtitles that SubDownloader located, simply right-click the subtitle and choose "Play With," and then choose one of two options: Mplayer or VLC (obviously, the players need to be installed first in order to use them).

You can customize which languages to search for, and if you find subtitles you want to keep, you can download the subtitle files to a location of your choosing. If you're a inescapable uploader, you can upload subtitles if you have any laying around (as we all do, of course).

SubDownloader is free, with builds for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.

SubJoost adds user generated subtitles to Joost

SubJoost
If you're the sort of person who likes to watch TV with closed captioning on, you may have noticed that most internet video has one thing missing: subtitles. Whether you're watching YouTube, Hulu, or Joost, odds are the only time you'll see subtitles are when someone uploads a foreign language video and feels like taking the time to add English subtitles (or vice versa). In other words, there's no option to turn subtitles on and off. They're either there or they're not.

SubJoost is a community driven Joost plugin that lets you turn on and create subtitles for any video served up by Joost. Just install the widget and select your language of choice. If subtitles are available in your language, they'll show up on selected videos.

The problem is right now there are almost no videos with subtitles available. While there's a list of subtitled videos on the SubJoost web page, we found that very few of these movies and TV shows actually have more than a handful of captions. But since this is a community driven project, there's an easy fix for that problem. Anyone can sign up for a SubJoost account and start creating their own subtitles. So get crackin already, will you?

Overstream: Subtitles for online video

Overstream
Overstream has a simple concept - add subtitles to videos you find on services like YouTube or Google Video. It basically works like this: you register for an account, grab a video's link, throw it into Overstream, add your subtitles with customizable durations and timings, and save. The how-to tutorial on using the service is remarkably good and gets you subtitling in no time.

Obviously there are a number of things you could use this for - add commentary to a video, supply subtitles in another language, or write personal messages for that special someone. Since you can set whether you want the subtitled video to be public or private, you can unleash your dreams of text on video as you please. And, to make sure your subtitling efforts do not go to waste, you can always import and export subtitles to and from your videos in SRT format.

The number of subbed videos available on the site for browsing is still rather low - so there isn't too much subbed content for you to browse through - but that is likely to change as more people start using the service. Which, considering the large catalog of videos that Overstream is compatible with, is definitely plausible.

Apple's Japanese Mac ads

Imagine you were unexpectedly thrust into a world where those same cute Mac-and-PC ads were on TV, but they were in a language you couldn't understand!* That world is, well, Japan, and those ads are right over here. They're just like the American ads we're used to, except with two funny Japanese dudes, and they're in Japanese. You can check out the ads in their full-resolution glory at Apple Japan, or you can just look below, where low-res but English-subtitled versions away.

Funny, but it's just not the same without our national treasure John Hodgman. You can find the other two ads after the jump.
