You too can be a nosy neighbor with iStalkr

stalk friends with istalkrWho's up for a little stalking? Its ok, no Britney Spears stalking, just some RSS and ATOM feed stalking. iStalkr is out of beta and ready for users to create a world of spying and nosiness.

iStalkr is a web application that creates a "lifestream" that will track RSS and ATOM feeds from a variety of services that you might use throughout the day including Digg, Del.icio.us, Flickr, Google Reader and Twitter over a time line. From that point, you can choose to paste a time line of data into a website or blog to let people know what you are up to, or monitor other people's timelines to see what they have been up to.

It's a pretty cool application, but really doesn't serve any other purpose.. Sure its great to see how many times someone twitters, when they check out their news feeds, and how many times they Digg something throughout the day, but it's just another fluffy Web 2.0 gadget.

MySpace's lawyers shut down SingleStat.us

SingleStat.usSingleStat.us, a service I covered earlier this month that will notify you when your special someone changes their MySpace status, has been shut down by those buzz-killers at News Corp., MySpace's parent company. The site's creator, David Weekly, has posted the cease & desist letter from MySpace's lawyers as well has his response at the SingleStat.us web site. The lawyers allege trademark infringement on Weekly's part as well as putting a burden on MySpace's servers, both of which seem fairly fanciful to me. Weekly's response is worth a read. It begins, "While I do not believe there to be legal grounds for termination of the service, out of respect for the MySpace service the website is no longer operational and there are no more automated queries being made to MySpace's service. (Gross revenues from operations totalled $0.00.)" and ends, "It might seem further unfortunate that with the large number of spam profiles on MySpace that abuse and degrade the MySpace service (with invites to sex webcams and promotions) that News Corp. would see fit to shut down a service engineered explicitly to improve the MySpace experience." Ouch. Valleywag has a short interview with Weekly regarding the closure. Meanwhile, similar service DatingAnyone remains operational, as does Stalkerati.

MySpace stalking made even easier

DatingAnyone.comI should have known when I posted about SingleStat.us the other day that it couldn't be the first service to help you stalk that special someone on MySpace, and indeed it isn't. First is DatingAnyone.com, which is like SingleStat.us on steroids. It will scan your entire friends list and let you know whose relationship status has recently changed or view a friends list filtered based on relationship status and gender. Second is Stalkerati, a "little hack" that recent high school grad Jared Kim brags he "put together in 2 hours." It doesn't let you monitor people's relationship statuses, but it does make it easy to check up on someone. Enter someone's name and it will give you search results on Facebook, Friendster, Technorati, and Google Images. Unfortunately, its MySpace search is currently broken (come on, Jared, throw another half-hour at it and get it fixed!). It also has a handy sidebar that lists the "Top Stalked" in the last 24 hours.
