SMPlayer 0.6.7 adds support for DVD menus

SMPlayer is a frontend for the open source MPlayer media player. Like MPlayer, that means SMPlayer can handle a wide array of video formats. And the latest build brings SMPlayer one step closer to being a complete replacement for Windows Media Center with experimental support for DVD menus.

SMPlayer 0.6.7 also makes it esier to load external subtitle files, doest a better job of sorting new files added to playlists, and and allows users to configure audio and subtitle delays if necessary.

The media player is available for Windows or Linux. There's also a portable version for Windows that can be run from a USB flash drive.

SMPlayer open source media player goes portable

SMPlayer is a frontend for the open source MPlayer, which means the media player can handle pretty much any media file you can throw at it, as long as it isn't wrapped up in DRM. SMPlayer is available for Windows and Linux. And now there's a portable version for Windows, which means you can run the media player without installing it. Just download, unzip, and click the executable file.

SMPlayer Portable supports all the same media formats as the classic version. The major difference is that you can install it to a USB flash drive for use on any computer. The portable application is based on SMPlayer 0.6.2, which is the latest version. It lacks the icon themes included in the full version, and it won't write anything to your Windows Registry. You can find a complete list of differences between SMPlayer and SMPlayer Portable in the user forums.

3 free video players for watching almost any movie

Last week we told you about SMPlayer, a powerful, yet easy to use frontend for open source media player MPlayer. We were pretty impressed with SMPlayer, which can run on Windows or Linux and can handle almost any format except for Real Media.

But our wonderful readers pointed out that SMPlayer was hardly unique. You've probably heard of VLC, but here are three other media players that can handle pretty much any video you can throw at them. Oh yeah, and they're all absolutely free.

Watch almost any video with SMPlayer

SMPlayerThere are a lot of useful media players out there for handling pretty much any video format you can throw at them. VLC is a pretty nifty all-in-one solution, as is Media Player Classic.

Martin over at gHacks just turned us onto another powerful media player, SMPlayer. It's a front-end for MPlayer, and comes in Linux and Windows flavors. There's also support for a whole slew of languages.

The best thing about SMPlayer is that it just works out of the box. You don't need to install any additional codecs, and it will handle everything from Quicktime movies to Windows Media Video. Of course it has no problem with DivX, XviD, and other MPEG-1/2/4 varieties. It does not appear to support Real Media files.

Is SMPlayer a VLC killer? It's hard to say. But it does have a clean, simple interface that makes it pretty attractive if you find the bells and whistles of VLC a bit confusing.
