PicLens image browser plugin adds support for YouTube

PicLens YouTube

You know those pretty slideshows that you can view in Flickr? PicLens is a browser plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer that lets you view images from a bunch of sites as slideshows. When we last looked at PicLens, you could view images from Flickr, Google, Photobucket, SmugMug, DeviantArt, and Yahoo! Now PicLens has added support for YouTube videos.

When you click the PicLens button in your browser, you get a black screen and a search bar. Just type any term in the search bar and you can sift through a wall of YouTube thumbnails. Click a video and it will start playing. You can blow videos up to full screen, or look through more thumbnails while your video is playing. In other words, it's kind of like watching YouTube without the ads.

View Flickr slideshows Cover Flow style

Guckn
One of the things that makes Flickr so mesmorizing is the ability to watch image sets using Flickr's slick slideshow feature. But if you're looking for an alternative slideshow viewer, you might want to check out Flickr Cover Flow or Flickr Guckn.

Both sites essentially do the same thing. They let you view Flickr sets using a Apple Cover Flow-style slideshow player. Guckn is probably the easier site to use. Basically you can take any Flickr photoset and replace "flickr" in the URL with "guckn." If you visit Guckn.com you can also see a slideshow with 100 recently uploaded images. That it's. No bells and whistles.

Flickr Cover Flow gives you a few more options. You can find images by photoset ID, user name, or even date. You can also choose whether or not the slideshow should automatically scroll and determine how long to pause on each image.

Neither site offers an embeddable player, which is a little disappointing. It would be nice to have a custom Flickr image viewer that you could embed on your own site. But since these services just present an alternate way to view Flickr slideshows, the novelty wears off pretty quickly and it just seems easier to look at pretty pictures on Flickr's site.

Another way to embed Flickr Slideshows in your blog

PictobrowserLooking for a good way to show a whole bunch of photos on your blog or website without creating a single page a million miles long with picture after picture? Last year we showed you how to embed a Flickr Slideshow on your web page manually. Then earlier this year someone managed to create a tool to automate the process.

But while the default Flickr slideshow looks great in some situations, we've found that the slideshow just doesn't display properly on some blogs. Fortunately, there's another way to embed a Flickr slideshow. You won't have all the same cool transition features you get on Flickr's site, but them's the breaks.

Pictobrowser lets you create your own slideshow using images that share a tag, fall into a set, or are part of a group. The only catch is that you need a Flickr account and you can only create a slideshow using your own images. Check out a sample slideshow after the jump.

Fullerscreen 2.0 for Firefox: now with slideshows

Fullerscreen 2.0
Fullerscreen is a Firefox add-on that supercharges your browser's full-screen mode. While Firefox has a built in full-screen mode that pops up when you hit F11, it really just makes some of your toolbars go away. Fullerscreen makes them all disappear.

This weekend, Daniel Glazman released Fullerscreen 2.0. While the original program didn't really leave much room for improvement (what was he going to do, design a program that makes your monitor larger?) Glazman has added a new feature: slideshow support.

If you visit a page that's formatted for slideshows, when you press F11, Firefox will ask if you want to enter slideshow mode. You'll then be able to navigate a simple presentation with your keyboard's arrow keys. Slideshows are pretty easy to design, and in fact, you can watch a slideshow that describes the process. But unless Fullerscreen becomes fully integrated into a future Firefox release, I can't see many web designers actually creating slideshows designed for this particular add-on.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
