Google Chrome theme gallery opens with 29 themes, several blindingly ugly

Just a few days after being spotted in Chrome's new tab page, the official Google Theme Gallery is now open for business.

Am I really going to stick with the grass theme? Probably not, but I was in the mood after finishing up my yardwork this evening. There are currently 29 different skins available.

As with other theme galleries, not all of the options are going to win a GUI beauty contest. Some of them (like Legal Pad - check it after the break) might make you do a spit take. There are, however, some interesting options. At the very least, maybe this will help spell the end of bothersome Chrome skinning that involves backing up the default.dll and restoring it after Chrome crashes due to an incompatible skin.

Some of the themes - like Dots, also pictured after the break - even bleed past the bookmarks toolbar on the new tab page. The download and history pages, however, are kept clean below the divide. Thank god, because that would be a little more than I could take.

Remember, you'll need to be running the Chrome 3 beta or developer channel or be using a recent build of Chromium to get in on the fun. If that includes you, check 'em out then tell us which one you're switching to in the comments. Unless you're not impressed with the selection, in which case - sound off!

After all this "make your Firefox look like Chrome" nonsense, I'm holding out for the Firefox skin - just so I can post confusing screenshots.

Google Chrome adds better theme support, gallery in the works

Extensions in the wild may be a little slow in appearing, but themes for Google Chrome? They've just gotten a lot easier to install and there may be a flood of them available very shortly.

Right now, there are only two demo themes available -- Snowflake (screenshot) and Camo. Based on the thumbnail in Chrome's new tab, Google has a whole lot more that are nearly ready for public consumption. The actual link returns a 404 error, and then, of course, the thumbnail breaks accordingly.

Once the link goes live, you'll have easy access through Options -> Personal stuff. Buttons have been added to reset Chrome to its default theme or download something new.

It's a huge step forward from the old method - renaming and replacing a .dll in your application data folder. CNet's Stephen Shankland reports that this is working on Mac OS X as well.

To try it out, you'll need to update your dev channel build or download it from Google.

Make Firefox 3 or 3.5 look like the Firefox 3.7 new theme mockup

Well, that sure didn't take long.

Just days ago Mozilla posted a few conceptual images displaying a new default theme for Firefox 3.7. Thanks to DeviantArt user Boneyard Brew and his friends, you can now tweak your existing Firefox 3 install (provided you're not running 3.6) look pretty dang close to the mockups.

You'll need to grab a couple things to pull off the transformation:
The end result is pretty faithful to the mockup. Pull the switcheroo and confuse your pals - tell them you got your hands on an early pre-alpha (Make it more convincing with a quick Titlebar Tweak)!

Mozilla makes Firefox skinning easy with Personas

Personas Screenshot

In a move aimed at making Firefox easy to personalize, Mozilla has released an extension called Personas. After a quick install, users can easily change the look of their beloved browser without the frustration of dealing with Firefox "Themes".

We agree with the Mozilla labs blog that themes are way to hard to find and install. Plus having to restart your browser just to apply a themes is just annoying. Another advantage for Personas is that graphic designers can apply different styles to the browser without having to write code.

Here's how it works. First you install the plugin and restart your browser. After Firefox comes back up, you see a little fox in the lower left hand corner (screenshot below), click the fox and select among the themes. Your browser is instantly skinned with no headache whatsoever! Personas is ready to use on Firefox 2.0 through the 3.0 Betas.

A feature we love is that the list of "personas" will auto-magically update on a regular basis. Maybe Mozilla labs just made browser skinning so easy that our parents could do it? Hmm maybe not!

Make your Windows Mobile 5.0 device look like WM6

Visual Windows Mobile 6Can't wait for HTC to offer a free Windows Mobile upgrade for your PDA? Visual Windows Mobile 6 is an application designed to make your Windows Mobile 5.0 PDA or phone look and act a bit more like a WM6 device.

It seems like this happens every time a new operating system is announced. There are programs to make Windows XP look like Vista or Mac OS X. There are programs designed to make Windows Mobile phones look like Apple's upcoming iPhone.

Really, what this shows is that independent developers are just about as capable as large businesses at developing ways to spruce up a computer interface. But people are more likely to notice their designs when they pick up on innovations that are already getting a lot of attention like the Aero interface in Windows Vista, the touch-screen iPhone, or in this case, Windows Mobile 6.

Visual Windows Mobile 6 also comes with a couple of extra programs that add functions like a fake cursor, battery monitor, and program launcher.

Object Desktop 2007 for Windows reviewed

Object Desktop 2007Object Desktop 2007, described by its maker Stardock as "a suite of desktop enhancement utilities designed to allow users to turbo-charge their Windows experience," is probably best known for WindowBlinds, a program that allows Windows to be "skinned." Object Desktop really is a suite, though, and includes a whole pile of programs like IconPackager for replacing your icons in one fell swoop and WindowFX for adding new visual effects to Windows. CRN has taken the latest version of Object Desktop for a spin and gives it fairly high marks, recommending its interface customization features for kiosk use, but cautioning administrators against changing around interface features that users are accustomed to. Object Desktop 2007 costs $49.95.

Skins for uTorrent

uTorrent skinTiny-but-featureful WIndows BitTorrent client uTorrent got a great new web site a few days ago, and along with it came a great new skins gallery. I had no idea uTorrent was even skinnable, but apparently it has been—to a degree, at least—for some time now. uTorrent's skin support is fairly minimal, only allowing toolbar buttons, status icons, and tray icons to be altered, but what more can you expect from a 130kb app? The skins come in the form of .BMP files and need only be placed in your %APPDATA%\uTorrent folder, and if you're artistically inclined making skins is a snap.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
