MS Home Server bundles video messaging, Sightspeed

Microsoft's new product, Home Server, promises to make mundane tasks like media sharing and backup simpler for Joe Six Pack to deal with, but we've been wondering--is this really just a product for geeks? XP Media Center Edition was embraced by at least a portion of the geek populace, but outside the ranks of the nerdy, it never really got much attention. The entertainment industry didn't see it as appliance-like enough, we suppose.

But Home Server is different--it's the piece of software that should have existed before Media Center Edition was ever produced, because it provides some of the nuts and bolts that, if coupled with Media Center Edition, could've made the latter a truly great offering. Lest we digress, Home Server fans now have one more reason to get excited: the addition of video conferencing and video-mail using Sightspeed.

First off, if you've never used Sightspeed, you should give it a shot. It's the most grandma-friendly video-conferencing app we've ever seen. With Home Server, Sightspeed will archive call recordings and video mail messages into the Home Server, making them reviewable from another PC, Mac, or even your XBox. The only thing that could top that would be video-conferencing on the XBox itself. Sightspeed says they have no plans to bring their client to Xbox, but we have a feeling it's coming.

Mac VoIP/Video tools: new features just keep comin'

With all the hoopla surrounding video in recent weeks, thanks to the video-centric Fall VON trade-show in Boston, it's no surprise that the folks making VoIP communications tools for the Mac have embraced video-conferencing. Since I did a head-to-head comparison of the four major VoIP communication tools for Macworld back in July, so much has changed. The video has gotten better and easier--so easy, in fact, that MTV's Total Request Live has made one of these sweet tools a part of its regular broadcast arsenal, allowing viewers of the show to interact with via TRL's famous video wall--and it's not Skype.

All of these tools are free downloads, and all of these tools have been around a while.

Sightspeed gets up to speed

It wasn't that long ago that I was reviewing the VoIP and video-conferencing tool SightSpeed, which allows Windows and Macintosh users to call each other with excellent quality via the Internet. Sightspeed's big claim to fame is its superior synchronization of audio and video (isn't it annoying when the person you're Skyping is mouthing the words 3 seconds after you hear them?).

Now, Sightspeed has upped the ante on its competitors by adding PC-to-phone calling. So you can call dear old Grandma in Hacketsville, where they don't have broadband yet, via her standard phone.  This brings Sightspeed into the fold with other desktop calling tools like Gizmo Project and Skype, but Sightspeed's superior video implementation and community features puts it clearly in the lead, if you ask me.  Plus, it's hard not to like the Sightspeed Video Guy, pictured here.

This webcam doesn't work with the Mac, or does it?

So, you're strolling through CompUSA or your favorite box store electronics retailer, and you walk down the aisle full of webcams, yearning to use an Internet video-conferencing tool like Sightspeed or iChat to talk with some buddies or family on the other side of the planet.  You carefully examine the packaging of each of the web cameras and realize, "hey--none of these support Mac OS X!"

Well, don't fret. I just found a great piece of software that brings driver support to Mac OS X for a large number of webcams that claim they only work with Windows. It's called macam, and version 0.85 just hit Sourceforge. This version claims support for dozens of cameras, and you can grab it here.
