3DSee is 3D modeling made easy on the web

3DSee is a way to generate 3D models of real-life objects without doing a ton of complex drawing and tracing. You just need to take several digital photos of the object, and 3DSee can generate a greyscale "bump map" that it can use to render your object in three dimensions. Right now you can just get a low-res model textured from one of your images, but the software actually creates a higher-quality fully-textured model that might be available for download in the future.

3DSee's "coming soon" features look pretty impressive. In addition to high-def mesh models, the site also plans to support Second Life output files. If I'm reading that correctly, it would definitely save Second Life users a lot of time and trouble when it comes to getting their favorite real-life objects into the game as models. Although I'm sure it will take some time for users to get the hang of taking the right photos to get a good render, the concept behind 3DSee is very strong. A lot of non-artists would love to experiment with 3D, and 3DSee looks like a great chance to do that.

Google Lively: a 3D social networking/chat tool that nobody asked for

Lively
If you've ever thought it would be a good idea to embed a chat widget on your web site, Google has another proposition for you: Why stop there? Why not embed a 3D environment, let users create avatars, decorate a room, and chat with one another? The company has taken the wraps off of Lively, a 3D social networking/chat service that does just that. You can create or join Lively rooms through Lively.com or you can embed rooms on any site using a small snippet of HTML code.

We got our first clue that Google was up to something in the social networking/virtual world space last year when a student at Arizona State University snapped a screenshot of the signup page for a top secret Google project. At the time we guessed that Google was building a Second Life competitor. But since it's a web-based service, it looks like Lively is more of an IMVU competitor. That should come as no surprise, since as VentureBeat points out, one of the founders of IMVU now works for Google.

Is Google testing a Second Life style virtual world?

Google ASU
Students at Arizona State University are being offered a chance to test a new product that will be launched later this year by an unnamed major company. Although the beta is available only to ASU students, and participants have to sign a nondisclosure statement to sign up, one student snapped a couple of images of the signup page.

So here's what we know. The questionnaire asks about social sites like Facebook, Friendster, and MySpace. There are also hints the project involves 3D modeling and video games. And one question is whether users have a Gmail account and/or would be willing to sign up for one, which is leading to speculation that this is a Google project.

What kind of Google project is kind of up in the air, but since we love some good speculation, we're willing to go with the theory that Google plans to launch some type of Second Life competitor. While Second Life and other virtual worlds are merely virtual, Google already has access to boatloads of satellite imagery which is used in Google Maps and Google Earth. Imagine a social network where you could walk an avatar down the street to your friend's house to chat, or wander into a store in Japan to check out its inventory and buy virtual or real life goods.

Of course, this is all just speculation. It's possible the project has nothing to do with Google or virtual worlds at all.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
