Post screenshots to Wordpress blogs with a Firefox add-on

On my list of 14 extremely useful Firefox addons I included ScreenGrab for capturing web pages to PNG or JPG images.

Today, I replaced it with Screen Grab to Wordpress. As you probably guessed, it's got the same core functionality with one major addition: the ability to send images directly to your Wordpress-powered blog.

Configure the URL, username, and password to all your Wordpress blogs an you're ready to go (just make sure you have XML-RPC remote publishing enabled).

Click the icon in your Firefox status bar to display SGW's menu and choose what to capture and where to send it. You can save locally, copy to the clipboard, or post directly to Wordpress.

If you're blogging a capture, you can enter a title, tags, body text, and even set your new post to publish - if you don't check the box, the post defaults to draft status. After successfully uploading, you're taken directly to the Wordpress edit page to put the finishing touches on your new post.

With less than 600 downloads to date, this one is a bit of a diamond in the rough. It's a tremendous timesaver for anyone blogging about items discovered while browsing with Firefox.

QlipBoard lets you make movies from photos

We're always on the lookout or good screencasting software her at Download Squad HQ. While we showing you screenshots of new programs and websites, sometimes you need a video, or at least a whole bunch of photos to really get a point across.

QlipBoard is a free application that lets you create a video out of images. You can either load in a series of photos or screenshots and put them in order, or use QlipBoard to capture images. It's sort of like Microsoft Photo Story, but with a few extra options like the ability to narrate and annotate your slideshow.

While CamStudio and Screencast-o-matic are both useful free video capturing applications, it's always nice to have a few extra tools in the arsenal. We made a quick and dirty little slideshow showing the installation process for QlipBoard using QlipBoard. How meta is that?

QlipBoard comes in free and paid varieties. The free version includes ads, while the paid version includes advanced features and upgrades for a monthly or annual fee.

Window Clipping helps you make better screenshots

Window ClippingsLooking for a free Windows screen capture utility now that FastStone has gone from freeware to shareware? Well, for simple screenshots you can still just hit print screen and paste into your favorite image editor. Or you can use irfanview's screen capture utility to capture individual windows.

But if you're looking for something a bit more advanced, you might want to check out Window Clippings. The light-weight application comes in free and $10 varieties.

The free version lets you:
  • Include multiple windows in your selection
  • Launch option window or screen capture from command line
  • Convert images to black and white
For $10 you get a few more options, like the ability to include the mouse cursor in your screenshot, freeze the window while capturing, and capture a file to the clipboard.

Create Screenshots or Screencasts with Jing

Jing
Here at Download Squad, we're always on the lookout for good screenshot and screencasting utility. Especially free screenshot and screencasting utilities. And it helps if they're cross-platform applications.

That's why Jing looks so exciting. It's a free, cross-platform (Mac and Windows) application for taking screenshots or making screencasts. Jing is from the developers of Snagit and Camtasia Studio, both of which are commercial applications. It's not clear whether Jing will remain free after it loses its beta status, but for now it's a pretty powerful little application.

It captures screencasts as Flash files, which you can upload and share with other users. Jing is tightly integrated with Screencast.com, letting you upload and share files from within the application. After the jump, check out a quick video we made showing how to split an audio file with Audacity.

WebShot: Full-page web site screenshots from the command line

WebShotIn the past I've featured a couple of Firefox extensionsal (Page Saver, ScreenGrab) that you can use to grab a screenshot of an entire web page, top to bottom. In case those aren't your cup of tea, or if you just don't use Firefox, here's another alternative: WebShot. It's a free Windows app that you run from the command line. It has a number of options for you to tweak, including the width and height of the (virtual) browser window, the width and height of the resulting image, and the image format (PNG, GIF, JPEG, and BMP are supported) and quality. It's not for the CLI-phobic, but sometimes not having a GUI can be advantage, e.g. if you want be able to schedule an automatic screen grab once a day.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
