Z-Cron makes Windows task scheduling easy

Z-Cron

Z-Cron is a free task scheduling utility for WIndows. But wait, doesn't Windows aready include a task scheduler? Yes, but it's not exactly what we'd call user friendly. And while Z-Cron might look a little intimidating at first glance, it includes a nice long list of activities that you can schedule with just a few clicks. Here are just a few of the tasks included:

  • Alarm CLock
  • Cleanfile - delete old files
  • CopyDir - Copy a directory (great for performing daily, weekly, or monthly automated backups)
  • Delete files
  • Download files
  • Empty trash
  • Hibernate
  • Log out
  • Move a directory
  • Switch a screensaver on or off
  • Send an email
  • Shutdown
  • Standby

While there are a ton of tasks built into the interface, you can also create your own by selecting programs you want to name and scheduling a time for them to run.

Xecutor - Windows scheduling on steroids

XecutorWhile Windows has the ability to automatically schedule the execution of processes, it is quite limited with respect to handling more interesting process triggering criteria. For example, if you're looking for a way to run a specific process (defragmenting your hard drive, for example) before shutting down, Xecutor is the ticket.

It can automatically intercept the Windows shutdown command, and trigger your commands allowing them to execute to completion before actually shutting down the computer. Further, you can schedule certain tasks to occur only on certain days of the week, for example have system maintenance tasks fire on the weekend.

Xecutor is free for home use, but the developer requests that if you are going to use it at home that you send him a postcard.

Doodle: Schedule meetings by committee

DoodleSometimes scheduling meetings and get-togethers sucks. The difficulty of finding a date and time that works best for everyone increases exponentially with the number of people involved. Doodle aims to simplify things. It's a simple web-based polling app that lets you list possible dates and times for an event and then survey all of the interested parties. When you create a poll, you're given a link to send to everyone--no sign-up required!--and another link to keep track of the results. Those you invite just enter their name, click on the dates that work for them, and submit. Doodle then tells you which date and time works best and how many people can attend then. Fast, free and easy!

Skobee: Make plans

SkobeeSkobee is an interesting web service that's supposed to make it easier to get people together. Having this very week utterly failed to organize a gathering when an old friend came to town, this appeals to me immensely. The main concept is "start general and get specific as needed": you add a bunch of people to an invite list with a vague plan ("dinner soon") and as people get your invite they can suggest places and times ("Mexican, early next week") until a consensus is reached ("Hacienda, 8pm Tuesday"). You can switch back and forth between suggestions and see when friends are available, and it even has built-in local search and maps. Skobee also has a cool feature whereby you can CC Skobee on an e-mail to a friend with a few keywords and it'll automatically set up an event on the web site. I'm definitely trying this out the next time I want to arrange a get-together.
