Google Android now has a barcode scanner

It just became a really good idea to take your Google Android device shopping with you. Android now packs a barcode scanning feature that plugs into Google's Mobile Product Search database, so you can compare prices on items you find and see if it might be cheaper to buy online. The scanner currently works best with media like books and dvds, or with electronics, but more products are being added all the time.

To enable it, browse on your Android phone to Google.com, select "More" and then "Shopping" and Product Search. Then click on the Scan Barcode button. This should install the software on your device. To use the app once it's open, you can just point the red line over a barcode, and Android should do the rest. If it doesn't work for the item you want, you can still resort to old-fashioned keyboard search.

iCopy turns your scanner and printer into a 1-click copy machine

iCopyDon't have one of those newfangled all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/time machines? Well, if you've got a printer and a scanner hooked up to you computer, you probably know that it's not that hard to use your PC as a copy machine. Just scan an image with the one and print it with the other.

The problem is that you might wind up having to use two or three separate programs to do the scanning and copying. iCopy makes the process a lot simpler.

You can either download an installer or a zip file. For some reason the installer didn't work on our test system, but the standalone .exe file in the zip version worked perfectly. The source code is also available.

The program will find your printer and scanner, and let you create copies by pressing the big button. You can also adjust your printer/scanner settings, choose the number of copies to make, and set brightness and contrast levels.

LinkScanner checks links for validity

LinkScanner
I was pondering the other day about how I had no way to pre-check links to see if they were malicious, then I saw LinkScanner. Alright, I wasn't thinking that, but it is a nice story. I realize it is a bit impractical to use LinkScanner to check every link you click on, in fact it is downright impossible and dumb. There are no guarantees that LinkScanner will save you from malware anyway, but it is a good tool to check links, especially ones that look suspicious. The service will check-out the link on their servers, I imagine in some sort of sand-boxed environment. LinkScanner will return the exploits that exist on the site for you, so you know before you go.

SimpleOCR

SimpleOCRSo, simple American boy meets an attractive American flatbed scanner. It is a story we have all heard a hundred times, right? What happens in the story is the boy falls in love with the scanner, pledges it all his paper and digital bliss for as long as the scanners warranty is good. So he takes the scanner home, carries it over the threshold, and plugs it into the wall and into the back of his computer. A match made in NewEgg? The boy cares for the scanner, gets the latest drivers, makes sure he buys the best high speed shielded USB cable, and everything is peachy. Wait, what, no OCR software? Why wasn't that in the prenup? Where's my PaperPort disc? "I don't have Textbridge" he thinks, "maybe I was getting into this a little too fast, I mean I didn't even read the quick-start manual!"

Never fear, SimpleOCR is here. Available for free download, SimpleOCR is a great addition or even replacement for your OCR software. It is especially handy for those who do not have a good OCR software with which to recognize text from scanned documents. It has a fairly solid accuracy ratio, and learns as you go. Give it a shot! I use it at work right now, and it seems to do a bit better than others I have tried.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
