First IP friendly satellite scheduled to launch

So far, there is no IP routing in space. That's scheduled to change with the impending launch of the Department of Defense's Internet Routing in Space (IRIS) project.

Once in orbit, the first IRIS satellite will act like a router, feeding packets to other satellites and essentially creating the first permanent IP network in space. Limited ability to address orbiting birds has existed since the 1970s, but IRIS will make IP routing possible without individual downlinks.

What crazy applications can you picture for IP addressable birds?

Weather.com releases real-time weather for your street

real time weather map Bosses everywhere are going to love The Weather Channel. With maps being the number one draw for weather.com visitors, they have teamed up with Microsoft's Virtual Earth to offer users the ability to see real time weather reports for streets in the U.S.

The Interactive Weather Map can be viewed in either a "road view", or a much cooler satellite view, with different color blobs from greens to grays denoting the weather conditions. Want to see the directional path of the weather condition in your area? Check out the animation feature in the lower right corner, this plays a cycle of animated satellite imagery data, perfect for scrubbing through time while you watch storms and weather systems progress.

What does this mean for employees calling in late due to "weather"? Watch out; Your boss can track storm systems right down to the block you're on, so you might want to develop some better excuses.

Sandisk releases a Live TV recording device for flash cards

sandisk flash card recordingSandisk launched a TV recording device called the V-Mate. This new tool enables users to download and record up to three hours of video on SD, MicroSDHC, MiniSDHC, MMC, and Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo flash cards. The device measures 5.1x2.6x0.8 inches, and changes up the analog to digital by compressing video with MPEG 4, simply by connecting to the audio/video input on a TV. This is certainly the easiest way to trap TV signals, and transfer to computers for storage, editing, or playback.

This is certainly the easiest way to trap TV signals, digitize home videos, and transfer to computers for storage, editing, or playback. Recording for the V-Mate can be done through Cable, Satellite, DVD, VCR, PVR, and Camcorders. The V-Mate also has the functionality to let you schedule recordings based on channels, dates, and stop and start times. Play back on the V-Mate is the best. Since its on a flash cards, users have the ability to check out the shows on mobile phones, handheld devices, PDA's, PC's and of course through the V-Mate connected to any TV.

Watch TV for Free

free tv serviceFreeTube lets you watch TV without cable, satellite, or any other transmission devices or paid subscriptions. Their online service provides anyone that cares to watch, free TV service.

FreeTube has 12 different channel categories ranging from News, Business, Music, Sports, and Movies, each with a dropdown of different stations. The videos start streaming when the channels are clicked on, with some stations can be a little slow and buggy--I had my browser freeze a few times when trying to view. I'm not too sure where they are getting a lot of their streams from, most likely from online streams, nonetheless, FreeTube is a pretty cool idea that is a little rough around the edges.

DaylightMap: Google Maps after dark

DaylightMap
DaylightMap is the sort of thing you'd think some Google engineer would have done in his 20% time already. It's a Google Maps mashup that shows the Earth as it is: partly in sunlight, partly in shadow. It uses images from NASA to show Earth's man-made evening lights. By default DaylightMap shows the Earth as it is right now, but you can choose any time and date you wish. You can also switch to a night-only view and add markers by address, latitude and longitude, or mouse-click. The site's About page has some interesting technical details, as well as instructions on linking to particular views of the map.

Yahoo! Maps gets global satellite imagery

Yahoo! Maps with global satellite imagery

Yahoo! continues its slow creep up on Google in the web services department with a significant upgrade to Yahoo! Maps. The major change in the new release is global satellite imagery with, of course, an emphasis on U.S. cities. They've also added medium-resolution maps for cities around the world, and developers will be pleased to know they've released Version 3 of the Yahoo! Maps API to take advantage of the new features. It's nice to see the global maps and satellite images, but in the case of the latter, the resolution seemed was pretty lacking for the sample searches I did. You can read more about the new release on the Yahoo! Search Blog.
