Samsung open i900 Omnia application store

Stealing a jump on Microsoft's own 'Windows Marketplace for Mobile', Samsung have opened the doors to their application store for i900 Omnia owners (provided you live in the UK, France or Italy). We first heard about plans for the Samsung App store a few weeks ago.

Containing around 300 applications that can be purchased by credit / debit card, the application store is installed by downloading a CAB file from the Samsung site. Operator billing is planned for a future update to the store, as is support for newer Samsung WinMo handsets such as the lustworthy Omnia II i8000, the even more lustworthy OmniaPro N7610 and the not so lustworthy OmniaLite B7300.

Applications can be searched and filtered in a user interface that is intuitive and very familiar to anyone who has used a rival application store. One feature we are very pleased to see is the ability to try applications before you buy.

Developers who would like to list their applications in the Samsung store should visit the 'Samsung seller site' launched earlier this year.

Mobile Minute: Samsung launching yet another mobile app store

Samsung App Store
You know what the world really needs right now? Another mobile application store. Because it's just too hard to find good applications for your iPhone, BlackBerry, Google Android, Palm Pre, Symbian, or Windows Mobile phone. Wait, what? It's not? Well, tough noogies. You're getting another app store anyway, this time courtsey of Samsung.

The store will launch for customers in the UK, France, and Italy on September 14th, and it wil open up to additional countries later. At launch, the store will support the Samsung Omni and Samsung I8910 HD phones. There are plans to support additional smartphones later.

The thing is, the Samsung Omnia runs Windows Mobile, which means that the Samsung app store, which will let users download, purchase, and install mobile applications directly from their phones, may eventually wind up competing with the Windows Marketplace for Mobile application from Microsoft. But since Windows marketplace isn't available to the public yet, it looks like Samsung will beat Microsoft to market.

On the other hand, Samsung says a whopping 300 apps will be available at launch. There are already tens of thousands of applications available for Windows Mobile phones that can be downloaded from various sources on the internet. I'd be surprised if Microsoft didn't manage to launch its mobile app store with at least a few more than 300 applications.

The future of Windows Mobile

Samsung Ultra MessagingOur friends at Engadget got a sneak peak at a new Samsung Ultra Messaging device, set to go on sale soon in the Asian markets. What makes this noteworthy is that the device is obviously running a version of Windows Mobile (check out the telltale soft buttons on the bottom, not to mention the Windows logo), but this is most definitely not Windows Mobile 6. Or if it is, it's one heck of a plugin that makes Spb's impressive Mobile Shell look like child's play.

The best way I can describe the new interface is a cross between Windows Mobile and Windows Media Center. Rather than tapping on the screen or clicking on buttons to go through a series of full menus for each program, you can choose programs by scrolling.

You can zip through your email, contacts, appointments, and music programs very fluidly. As the application comes into focus, you can flip between submenus, all from your devices main menu. I'm going to assume you can then open programs in full screen mode in order to do things that take up more screen real estate, like checking your email. No word on how long we'll have to wait to see this new interface in the Western hemisphere.

In order to get the full effect, check out the video on Engadget.

Samsung announces 32GB and 64GB CompactFlash cards

Samsung 32 and 64GB CF cardsThat's gigabyte, not megabyte folks. All the professional photographers with Compact Flash (CF) cameras stood and clapped. Those without CF didn't. Engadget has you covered for this Samsung announcement, but what this means for downloaders is that when new devices come out like Zune, and as they start to include CF card slots, or other types of media, You will be able to pop in a CF card and expand your device by 32GB or 64GB. Soon, as Engadget says we will have flash memory based laptops, meaning these mondo cards could replace hard drives as we know them. The time-frame will be a few years or so most likely, but it is a distinct possibility. At least with Zune, it will all be wirelessly synced to your PC, so all your downloads can live in motion on your portable device.

Samsung's website compromised, look out

SamsungIf you are looking for some kind of product information for your new DVD player or Samsung TV, beware. Samsung's website has a keylogging Trojan lurking around. Please, what ever you do, be careful (as if I need to tell you) . It really sucks to have your computer compromised, not to mention your identity due to someone else's security breach. In general most users should be okay going directly to Samsung's site, but those going through IM or email links may have trouble. The Trojan also requires that a user accept a download (which may seem legitimate) so it isn't like you'll have no choice in the matter. Another thing is please alert your less-savvy friends and relatives, because things like this are tricky to gauge when they look but aren't in fact legitimate. This public service announcement (not) brought to you by the news.

Samsung to open music download store

Cookie tunesThe music business is like a big cookie. Okay, maybe not, but I heard that line in a movie and thought it was clever. Digital downloads are popular (duh!), and more companies are getting suited up to take their fare share of the cash there is to be made in digital music. Microsoft has been trying to break into the market in a big way for a while, which they hope will really get going when Zune hits the fan. The latest player to announce their foray into the digital music space is Samsung. They have a nice lineup of hardware devices to compete with the iPod or even Zune, but now they hope to bring their music store to the table as well. What really gets me is that all these Johnny-come-lately vendors are trying to do too much. They want the best player, and the best music store, but they want something that will beat Apple. It is not quite so hard to be good at one thing, but the problem most other companies are facing is that they aren't doing EVERYTHING well. Apple has taken names because they do almost everything well and it all works together seamlessly. Apple has good integration between the iPod and iTunes, even with their "made-for-iPod" vendors. Apple has an A to Z good offering that works well and is user-comfortable. Until other "download stores" see themselves as more than just a store, Apple will be number one. Personally I would love to see some other digital music ecosystems do well besides Apple, just to see what it would look like.

Origami Project: "The Mobile PC running Windows XP"

Origami?
Hardware isn't really among our core competencies here at Download Squad, but since we keep getting comments on our previous posts about Origami, Microsoft's vastly successful viral marketing campaign slash upcoming "ultramobile lifestyle PC," I figure I ought to keep you up to speed. The other day Microsoft updated the Origami Project web site for "Week 2," which isn't much more interesting than Week 1 was. A hidden comment in the source code, however, says "Origami Project: the Mobile PC running Windows XP," which is a very dull way to confirm what we already know. The teaser says we'll find out all about it on March 9, which happens to be the first day of Germany's CeBit electronics show.

Oh, I suppose you're wondering what's up with the above photo. That's a tablet PC reference box that Microsoft showed off at last year's WinHEC, which our pals at Engadget say is closer to what Origami will look like than that chunky thing from the year-old promo video that's been going around. Engadget's sources say that Origami will run XP Tablet PC Edition. What's more, Engadget has divined that it will be running on Samsung and Intel hardware rather than anything built by Microsoft and that the Ultra Mobile PC tech Intel is set to unveil on Tuesday is one and the same.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
