HotPads shows real estate rents, foreclosure, demographic heat maps

HotPads
Looking to buy a house or rent an apartment? There are hundreds of web sites that can help you in your search. But HotPads takes a rather unique approach with its real estate search engine. Not only can you search by price, location, and number of bedrooms, but you can also apply a series of heat maps that give you a better sense of the neighborhood.

Want to know how crowded the area is? Just click the population density heat map option and you'll get a good idea of how many neighbors will be sucking up your oxygen. You can also apply heat maps for per capita income, household income, median age, and median rent. There are even heat maps that show you the foreclosure rate per household, and the rent ratio. What's rent ratio? It's a comparison of rental rates versus mortgage rates in an area. In other words, if you see lots of blue, it means you'll probably save money by purchasing a home, while if an area is red, you're probably better off renting.

If you're looking for more mundane information, you can also plot schools, universities, and subway stops on the map.

BookSwim: just like the public library, but $24 per month

BookSwimIf you're the sort of person who likes to read three books at a time, but can't finish any of them within 30 days, and doesn't mind paying the price of a hardcover book every month without getting to keep anything, have we got the service for you!

BookSwim wants to be Netflix for books. That's right, they want you to pay a monthly fee in order to receive 5 to 11 books at a time via the mail. Unlike your public library, there's no late fee if you don't finish the book within three or four weeks. You can keep them until you're done, and then send them back.

But also unlike your public library, you have to pay a monthly fee to join. The cheapest plan lets you read up to three books at a time for $24 per month. If you've got more readers in your family the 11 books at a time plan might seem like a better deal -- at $36 per month.

Or you could, you know, go to your local library. They might not have 150,000 titles, but that's what interlibrary loan is for.

Got space? Rent it out with StoreAtMyHouse

storeatmyhouse rent space outMaybe you are quite the organized individual and have managed to clean up some valuable space in your closet, basement or garage. Now you can either jam it up with stuff over time, or rent that space out now.

StoreAtMyHouse connects people willing to rent out the extra space they have at their apartment, house or condo, matching them up with people who require some extra storage areas.

Whether you have space for rent, or are looking for available space the site is clean and easy to search through. StoreAtMyHouse is mashed together with Google Maps so users can easily check out where the storage location is. One question that I'm sure is on many minds, Will my stuff be safe? StoreAtMyHouse does provide a legal Agreement that states that the custodian shall bear all risks of loss or damage. And of course StoreAtMyHouse is not responsible for any harm against its members.

There are not a whole lot of rental areas at the time of this post, however, if you have space to rent, listing is free.

Netflix Mobile: Your movie queue on the go

Netflix MobileI'm not currently a Netflix subscriber, but I loved the service when I was (and even moreso for reintroducing the word "queue" into the American lexicon). This week Netflix launched Netflix Mobile, which lets you do the most important tasks that you can do on the standard Netflix web site, like viewing and changing your queue and browsing new movies, but from your mobile phone or PDA. I can see this being very useful when you're out with friends and someone recommends a movie to you--you can add it to you queue then and there, instead of waiting to get home and hoping you don't forget about it. Hacking Netflix has a few more details and several screenshots of Netflix Mobile in action.

Guba lowers prices for online movies

guba online videosOnline digital video store Guba has dropped its prices drastically on rentals and movie purchases in an effort to test the demand and impact their company can have.

Gubas Video-On-Demand 24 hour rental will drop to $0.99 for new titles, previously $2.99, and Download-To-Own titles will be $9.99 for new releases, which seem very reasonable. Guba has a large library of free viewing movies and videos as well. This price move is aimed at moving in and stealing a larger chunk of traditional rental outlets' market shares, and going head first againstother providers like YouTube.

YouTube currently has a market stronghold in the video arena, and with the new studio partnerships they are currently working on, Guba has a lot of catching up to do.
