Find a home for your unfinished songs on Rifflet

Rifflet
Rifflet is the perfect meeting ground for musicians without a muse. The site allows users to upload snippets of music, up to 60 seconds long, and offer them up to the community to do what they want with them.

The 'rifflet' can be as simple as a drum beat or bass line - as long as it gives another musician something to work with. When you find a 'rifflet' that appeals to you - you can finish it off, remix it, slap some lyrics on it - whatever you want. Anything uploaded on Rifflet is under the Creative Commons license, so whatever you come up with. Users can also share the final product since the 60 second limitation isn't enforced on the actual upload size. Not only does Rifflet target musicians, it also targets DJs, who can take the bits and pieces posted on the site and put them together any way they like.

The musical elitists in us thought that, since the site is open to pretty much anyone, it would be strewn with sorry excuses for songs, but we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and variety of music on the site.

Make your own remixes at YourSpins.

YourSpins is a social network site dedicated to those who love remixes. To start remixing your music, you'll need to download a plug-in for your media player (Windows Media Player, Quicktime and WinAmp are currently supported) as remixes are created from within the player. From there you'll be able to download the completed song with all the associated parts from the site to start your remix.

YourSpins has worked together with musicians to provide you with tracks that you can play with. This means each songs will have multiple instruments for you to choose from. And because all the tracks are provided, you won't run into issues of certain parts not being in tempo or instruments playing in the wrong key.

When you're done, the completed remix will be saved to your YourSpins page where others can listen to your mix. Points are given out depending on how well your mixes are received. Overall points are grouped in levels ranging from "Noob" on up to the "Omnipotent Grand Overlord".

If you want to give it a "spin" without downloading any plug-ins, you can try out their ecards service. While it doesn't give you the full experience it does give you a fun taste of remixing.

Cuts: Online video remixing, a Web 2.0 mashup gone too far?

TechCrunch reported this weekend about (yet another) video startup, this time with a twist. Cuts promises to allow users a chance to play editor to their favorite YouTube videos, cutting, splicing and looping their way to the creation of remixed video content.

Aside from the obvious and myriad legal issues, is this really where web video is headed? According to TechCrunch, "you just need the URL of your favorite video or click a bookmarklet to cut the video on your current page. [...] As of the private beta, Cuts will let you add captions, add a group of sound effects, loop sections of video, and trim out parts of the video."

I'm a superfan of remix culture, I'm just not yet sure where Cuts fits in. I'm anxious to see and try Cuts. The screenshots and writeup at TechCrunch show something far beyond what I'd have thought possible. Who wants to bet the guys at YouTube's legal department are readying a response as I write?

Video editing in a web browser with eyespot

eyespotTrue to his word, Michael Robertson announced eyespot today, a web-based video editor. This is part of his ajaxLaunch site, where they'll be launching a new ajaxian app each Wednesday. I'm sure NVU is heading for the ajax treatment any time. This is a neat trick, but there's a social aspect to it as well. You can take videos and clips from other users, and remix them into your own. That, in itself, is pretty neat. Can't wait to see more user generated content that Scoble claims is all baloney.

Megaman vs. Ghosts 'n Goblins - Today's Time Waster

Megaman vs. Ghosts 'n
GoblinsI've seen a few classic video game mash-ups before, like the brilliant Pong vs. Asteroids (okay I just made that up), but found many of them lacking. Mega Man vs. Ghosts 'n Goblins, however, is a masterpiece. It's a Flash game that seamlessly blends the original Mega Man and Ghosts 'n Goblins, a game I could never beat, into something that looks like it came right out of the basement of a bored NES programmer in 1987. It's just a few levels, but extremely fun and a surprising challenge.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
