Supreme SuperGamer packs tons of Linux gaming onto a dual-layer DVD

While you might not be able to play all the latest major release games on Linux, there are still plenty of excellent games that will work on the OS. I ran down 25 cross-platform titles a while back, many of which began as Linux-only games.

Want an easy way to try out a whole slew of 'em? Take the Supreme SuperGamer distro for a spin.

It's built on top of Vector Linux, a speedy little Slackware-based distro. What games are included? There's Doom 3, Quake Wars, Urban Terror, Soldier of Fortune, Postal 2, Nexuiz, America's Army, Torcs, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Unreal Tournament, Chromium B.S.U., Frets on Fire...and a whole lot more.

The ISO download is for a dual-layer DVD, so you'll need to have a compatible burner and the right media handy. If you're underquipped or just don't feel like torrenting 7+ gigs of data, you can pick up a DVD from On-Disk for $15.99.

note: screenshot is from an older version. my download hasn't quite finished yet...

QuakeLive hits open beta, the browser-based frag fest is on!

In case you were a little disappointed that we didn't score any invites for you the last time QuakeLive appeared on Downloadsquad (apart from those generously donated by reader Rocketfactor), I've got some good news for you.

ID Software is ready to open up the beta to the public. No more codes, no more waiting. Just get yourself over to Quakelive.com tomorrow and register.

The site will re-open Tuesday night (February 24th, 2009) following a 36-hour maintenance period today, during which there will be a purge of idle accounts. Stats will also be wiped, though current players will retain their other user data (name, customizations, profile information).

As long as things go as planned, you can expect the doors to be blown wide open as soon as the counter in the corner hits zero.

ID Software makes another push for Quake Live beta testers

In case you're out of the loop on this one, let's bring you up to speed. ID Software has dusted off Quake and plans to release Quake Live, a completely free, browser-based FPS.

Free? Yep.

There will, of course, be in-game advertising to generate revenue, but I doubt too many fans of ID's classics will be upset about that. Their employers may not be thrilled, however. Goodbye, productivity!

Quake Live currently runs on Windows, and while it's played in your browser there will be an offline bot mode available for practice purposes. Mac and Linux users will have to wait and see if they'll be able to get in on the action.

Registering for the beta won't guarantee you a spot. If you aren't the patient type, you can always do a quick Google search and see who's got some invites to share. The full release of Quake Live will happen this August at QuakeCon in Dallas.

Liberated Games - Commercial games that have become free

Here's a follow-up on our post about DOSBox. If you're looking for some free games to play on your new old-school emulated DOS system, check out Liberated Games. Liberated Games has a great list of games that are free to download from various computing eras. You will find the likes of the original top-down Grand Theft Auto, BMX Simulator, or even Quake III: Arena, and all for free. Some games are open-source offerings with source code available, while others are strictly binaries.

The creators of the site are currently looking for some assistance maintaining it, so if you have a passion for free games, maybe offer to lend some assistance. This is the kind of online endeavor that deserves some support.

Quake 4 SDK

Quake 4Question: What could possibly be more exciting than fragging a crazed Strogg alien with a high-calibre rocket launcher whilst dodging incoming plasma fire in an off-world space station that's been possessed by Satan himself?

Answer: Writing your own modifications for the above scenario.

id Software has posted their Software Development Kit for Quake 4!  Casual gamers won't get much use out of the SDK, but Quake-addicted programmers will be stuck in front of their computers writing code from now until Quake 5 hits beta.  Got C skills and an artistic flare that involves heavy weaponry? Here's your link.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
