Mario AI Competition pits AI programmers against one another

Mario AI CompetitionWhat if computers could play video games? Well, technically they can. Whenever you play a game that has other beings that can move independently (for example a hockey or football simulator, or a first-person shooter), AI (artificial intelligence) is employed. Basically, the better the AI, the better and less predictable your computerized opponents will be.

AI can also be used to control a player of a regular platform game, like Mario Brothers. And a competition has started for just that purpose. The goal of the Mario AI Competition is to have developers send in their artificial intelligence code, and have it control Mario through an infinite number of random levels. The competition is to see who's AI can get Mario through the highest number of levels.

So, why have a competition like this?

From the site:

One of the main purposes of this competition is to be able to compare different controller development methodologies against each other, both those based on learning techniques such as artificial evolution and those that are completely hand-coded. So we hope to get submissions based on evolutionary neural networks, genetic programming, fuzzy logic, temporal difference learning, human ingenuity, hybrids of the above, etc. The more the merrier! (And better for science.)

This seems like a great way to get programmers and other scientists that are interested in artificial intelligence involved in a fun but useful exploration of the craft.

Need a WordPress Job?

Love WordPress? Know how to set up, hack or write plug-ins for it? Then perhaps you might be interested in finding a WordPress Job. Hosted at jobs.wordpress.net (but apparently run by Automattic, developers of the now default WordPress widgets plug-in), WordPress Jobs is a pretty straightforward site hosting job offers for those who need WordPress ninjas of every order. Heck, there are even a few blogging jobs up there, and one (as of this writing) is paying $5/post for a web 2.0 blogger. The two most populated categories right now are General Positions and Programmer Positions, but each of the categories offer RSS feeds to help you stay on top of that next killer WordPress gig.

Ten questions for great programmers answered

ProgrammingBlogger Jaros?aw Rzeszótko sent ten questions to a bunch of notable programmers and posted their answers on his blog. Though not all of his recipients replied, several big names did, including Linux creator Linus Torvalds, Guido Van Rossum, creator of the Python programming language, James Gosling, creator or Java, and Ruby hackers Dave Thomas and David Heinemeier Hansson. To a programmer like myself, their answers are fascinating. Some of the most interesting answers are to the "How did you learn programming?" and "Next big thing" questions. It's interesting to see that the none of the respondents came up with the same answer to "What do you think is the most important skill every programmer should posses?"

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
