Easily and completely remove the Microsoft XPS doc writer

I do my best to minimize confusion and headaches for my retail customers. One thing that never fails to confuse and annoy is the Microsoft XPS Document Writer.

Most of them have no idea what it is or how it got added to their list of printers. To avoid phone calls from people saying things like "I thought you sold me an HP," I usually just click the icon, press delete, and go about my business.

Admittedly, that's not the most thorough way to get rid of a printer. To do a more complete job, download Rogosoft's Removal Tool. Not only will it delete the printer, but it also removes the driver, XPS library and Essentials Pack, and cleans up any package files that are left behind.

It's 32 and 64 bit compatible, and works on both XP and Vista. It's also fully portable, and free.

iCopy turns your scanner and printer into a 1-click copy machine

iCopyDon't have one of those newfangled all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/time machines? Well, if you've got a printer and a scanner hooked up to you computer, you probably know that it's not that hard to use your PC as a copy machine. Just scan an image with the one and print it with the other.

The problem is that you might wind up having to use two or three separate programs to do the scanning and copying. iCopy makes the process a lot simpler.

You can either download an installer or a zip file. For some reason the installer didn't work on our test system, but the standalone .exe file in the zip version worked perfectly. The source code is also available.

The program will find your printer and scanner, and let you create copies by pressing the big button. You can also adjust your printer/scanner settings, choose the number of copies to make, and set brightness and contrast levels.

PrinterAnywhere, enough said

Ever had trouble installing a home network or tried to get your laptop computer to print to your desktop's printer, to no avail? Well, in the event that you aren't a network administrator (most people aren't) and can easily fix this problem yourself, PrinterAnywhere is here to help. The software works by having you establish a username and password, then allows you to setup the client on both your PC's, including the remote printer name. This way, you bypass networking issues and are able to print documents over the connection made by the client. The nice thing is that you don't need to have the remote printer's drivers installed on your laptop, so long as your desktop has them installed, you're all set. It prints quickly, as if you had your laptop computer connected directly to the printer via cable. This is an interesting piece of free software, currently in beta. Now, I know what you're thinking, "why not just get a wireless card or wireless print server?" The answer is yes, that would be easier for some people. However, networking issues aside, one of the ideas behind PrinterAnywhere is that you can print documents to a friend's computer at a distance.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
