Dev Chair : Web 2.0 and future of desktop blogging clients

With all the new and shiny Web 2.0 applications coming out, one may easily be convinced that desktop applications are breathing their last breath. At least that's what Google would like you to think about Google Apps, and its chances against rival Microsoft Office.

On the blogging front, most of the popular blogging systems (Blogger, Vox, TypePad, WordPress, etc.) have incorporated some degree of rich/WYSIWYG editor to make life easier for bloggers. Some of them integrate with other Web 2.0 applications (e.g. Vox with Flickr and YouTube, Flickr with blog systems) to allow users aggregate their disparate content. Does this mean the slow death of desktop blogging clients?

Platial updates MapKit, adds new features

Palatial
Platial announced on their blog the other day some fairly major upgrades to MapKit. Some of the new features for MapKit include comment moderation, map updating via RSS (or CSV), interface enhancements, and more. Platial, if you aren't familiar, allows you to create your own maps using the Google Maps interface, and allows you to share your maps with others. For example, you can create a map of great places to go out to dinner, or a map of coffee shops with free WiFi, along with descriptions, pictures, tagging and video. MapKit allows you to embed a Platial map into your own web page, all by pasting a small amount of JavaScript into any HTML document. The thing that I really like about Platial is that it brings so many logical, social features together, without detracting from the ease of use of Google Maps. Based in Portland, Platial shares office space with values of n, the folks who bring us Stikkit.

Google Developer Service in the works

google open sourceA new Google Developer service is rumored to be in the works, and is aimed directly at the open source community.

Greg Stein at the Google Code Blog posts about how the new service is getting the final touches in time for the Open Source Convention (OSCOM) in Portland Oregon, July 24-28 2006.

A first thought by Garret Rogers had might have to do with some code tidbits he found earlier to suggest that Google was working on something called GWT, or Eclipse. He also dropped the "public code repository for developers" idea.

Greg's talk is on the 27th, so stay tuned to find out what this exciting new Google Open Source project could be!

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
