WebIS prepares Pocket Informant 9 for Windows Mobile release

Long time Windows Mobile developer WebIS have announced on their blog the forthcoming release of Pocket Informant 9, their brilliant PIM replacement product, cementing their commitment to the platform despite recent BlackBerry and iPhone releases.

The update, which can be downloaded in CAB form from the WebIS site as part of a 'soft launch', is 100% complete, awaiting supporting documentation and translations before making it's full debut.

Originally released in 2001, Pocket Informant consistently scoops up Windows Mobile software awards and is one of the best selling applications on the platform.

Version 9 adds features specifically tailored for Windows Mobile 6.5, as well as being backward compatible with previous Windows Mobile releases. New gesture support built into WM 6.5 enables swiping left and right in Day, Agenda, Month View, Week, Task View, and Date Picker to navigate between time periods and swiping left and right in editors to navigate between the tabs.

As well as the new gesture functionality, the new update adds new events and journal views, GTD support in tasks (Inbox, Context Groups, Project Groups, Next Actions), starred tasks, 'bounce scrolling', contact links directly in task / appointment subjects, a one month date picker based on the full month view, a month view free time finder, touch friendly editors, much improved touch support, full PNG support for icons and a free add-on pack of over 1200 icons.

Pocket Informant 9 is expected to receive a full release around 28th September, $10 cheaper than version 8 at $19.95, but if you'd like to try it out in the meantime, head on over to the Pocket Informant download server to grab a CAB format release.

Agendus coming to Windows Mobile

Agendus for Pocket PCIambic has launched a beta for a Pocket PC version of its popular organization program Agendus.

Agendus is a personal information management (PIM) suite for PalmOS that offers a complete replacement for the default calendar, contact, and notes programs. Like most PIM programs, Agendus offers a choice of multiple views, color schemes, and icons for sorting through their data. Along with Datebk, it's one of the more popular PIM suites for Palm.

The Windows Mobile market is currently dominated by Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant. I'll be curious to see whether there's room for another PIM suite in the Windows Mobile world. There are already a number of also-ran programs vying for third place in the popularity contest. Ulti-Planner is a light-weight PIM program, and Pen Agenda offers a clean look for a low price, but neither gets the kind of attention that Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant do.

What I think is really a shame is that there's such a large market for 3rd party calendar/contacts/notes programs. Considering these are the functions that most casual PDA users are looking for when they pick up a device, it seems a bit silly that the default features of Windows Mobile PDAs leave so much to be desired. The month and week views in Pocket Outlook's calendar couldn't be much less useful. And it doesn't look like Microsoft has any plans to change much in the next version of Windows Mobile.

Pocket Informant Calendar for Pocket PC

Pocket Informant CalendarWhile Pocket PC and Windows Mobile PDAs come with basic calendar, contact, and notes programs, if you're looking for more advanced features, you often have to look elsewhere.

Two of the most popular PIM (Personal Information Management) programs for Windows Mobile are Agenda Fusion ($29.95) and Pocket Informant ($24.95) Each offers a complete replacement for the calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes functions of your PDA.

As someone who has well over a thousand contacts in my database, I especially like the ability to quickly search through all my notes, appointments, and contacts at the same time in case I wrote a phone number in an appointment instead of as a contact entry. Doing this with Windows Mobile's default search function could take minutes, while Pocket Informant does it in seconds.

But what if you keep all of your phone numbers in your cell phone, but want an advanced calendar for your PDA? Pocket Informant recently released a calendar-only version of its software for $12.95.

Pocket Informant Calendar gives you a variety of ways to view your appointments, including a 7-day week view that shows you more than blocks of time on a screen. If you've got a PDA with VGA resolution, you can even choose to show text for your appointments in the 30-day view.

One of my favorite features is the ability to show tasks in the calendar. Rather than showing tasks in the order that they are due, you can peg a task to a specific day. Unlike an appointment, if you haven't checked the task off it will follow you to the next day and the next.

VoiceMinder - Pocket PC voice note taker that works

VoiceMinder SettingsSome ideas are so dead simple that when I hear about them, they make me feel stupid to not have thought of it first. VoiceMinder from WIS (the makers of the wonderful Pocket Informant PIM software that I wrote about recently in our GTD series) is the latest software idea to make me feel dumb, in a good way.

While Pocket PC's have been able to record audio notes (most useful for voice recordings) since their inception, once recorded they don't do anything useful with them. At best, ActiveSync will synchronize your audio note into your notes folder in Outlook. I don't know about you, but while I do use the notes functionality in my Pocket PC as a sort of persistent sticky note application, I don't visit it regularly enough to check for voice recordings.

VoiceMinder takes care of the question of what to do with voice recordings in an obvious and yet brilliant way - it simply emails them to you. If there's one thing we all know we're going to check and process, it's our inbox, so it makes perfect sense for these notes to end up there. Frankly, it's almost embarrassing that there would be a need for a 3rd party application to perform this obvious function, but then WIS has made a very successful business on building (or should I say rebuilding) functionality for Pocket PCs the way it ought to have been in the first place.

VoiceMinder is currently in Release Candidate mode, giving the opportunity to kick the tires now. Previous WIS customers can pre-purchase their copy for $6.95, while it will cost new WIS customers $9.95.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
