Tetris'd - reverse Tetris Time Waster

I've seen a ton of Tetris variants in my day, and Tetris'd is a wild one. It's not even a puzzle game: it's a platformer, with Tetris blocks as the platforms. You play a tiny, acrobatic person (a ninja, maybe?) who can jump and climb on the blocks as they fall, and the object is to survive for as long as possible without getting squished or falling off the board.

The controls are tricky: there are only arrows, a grab and climb button, and a button to jump onto a midair piece. Theoretically, you could get pretty high in the air by jumping up onto a series of falling blocks, but I found the controls a little too unresponsive to do that effectively. It's still a fun game, though, especially when you manage to pull off a clutch move to escape certain death. Like in real Tetris, pieces fall faster as the game goes on. Unlike in real Tetris, lines never clear, so you just have to keep climbing up and up and up ...

Push is a quirky, challenging platformer - Time Waster

The platform game, centered on running and jumping action, has been around so long that's it tough to introduce new innovation to the genre. Push is a Flash game that manages to twist platform conventions by introducing a force field effect that you can use to push part of the terrain and clear a path for your character. The controls are a bit difficult to manage, and the graphics are very basic, but Push is a good time waster because the harder levels are really challenging.

The object of each level is to reach a yellow goal square by running, jumping and pushing. There are plenty of ways to die: you can fall, you can accidentally get squished if you let go of your force field at the wrong time, or you can hit obstacles. The problem is that you run and jump using the arrows keys or WASD on the keyboard, but you push by pointing and clicking. The combination of keyboard and mouse controls was frustrating, and ultimately turned me off before I beat any of the hardest levels. If you have the patience, though, Push will reward you with 75 different maps and a terrain editor that lets you build custom levels.

Mirror's Edge 2D - Time Waster

Mirror's Edge 2DMirror's Edge is a successful 3D first-person platformer where players take control of Faith, a runner who's job is to transmit messages without garnering the ire of government surveillance. If you're not familiar with the franchise, it doesn't really matter; Mirror's Edge 2D is still a fantastic 2D flash game based on Mirror's Edge.

In the 2D version, you control Faith by using keyboard keys to run, duck, slide, climb, wallrun, and jump. The style of the game reminds me of a classic version of Mission Impossible on the Commodore 64. The most charming element of Mirror's Edge 2D is the rapid yet smooth way that Faith moves. The game is all about maintaining momentum, and it's easily to see why after playing the game for only a few minutes.

Mirror's Edge 2D has both a story mode and time trial mode, giving it considerable replay value for a free online game. This game feels like what I wish side-scrolling platform games had been like in their heyday.

Closure is an eerie, addictive platform/puzzle hybrid - Time Waster

In Closure, if you can see it, you can walk on it. The trick is to illuminate your path all the way to a door through which you exit each level. The sketchy, hand-drawn imagery is incredibly cool.

It's not as easy as picking up a light and walking around with it. You'll have to figure out where and when to place lights to navigate safely through each trial. Certain objects mirror your light around the screen and others will take it for a ride.

Occasionally you'll find instructions scrawled on the wall. They don't always provide a lot of information, but enough to keep you going. The screenshot, for example, shows the k key - which restarts a level. Wind up where it's drawn, and you'll be pressing it.

Closure is a brilliant and original game. It's highly addictive and currently rated 8.8/10 on Newgrounds.

Here's hoping you don't lose too much time playing it.

I Wanna Be The Guy: Hardest Platformer Ever? - Time Waster

Ok, I filed this under "fun," but once you give it a shot you might disagree with me.

I Wanna Be The Guy may be the most frustrating, hair-pulling game you ever play. As the developer states on one of his Zazzle shirts, it's "The game where everything kills you. Even the moon."

Within the first couple of minutes, I'd died more times than I cared to count, and that's the point. My poor keyboard nearly got smashed across the edge of my workbench. The game is so difficult (and addictive in a masochistic way) that you want to beat it just to say you did.

Levels have an old-school feel to them and borrow certain elements from some of your favorite classic games, like Bullet Bill and Zangief.

What makes it so hard? Anything can pop out from anywhere and kill you. Keep your eye on that wall, it'll start chasing you and then impale your unsuspecting butt.

IWBTG is kind enough to let you turn down the amount of splatter from your death, as well as music and sound effects - which can get a little irritating during an extended session.

This little baby is freeware, Windows only. If you're not ready for the full dose of insanity, grab the demo download and try the first few levels before taking the plunge.

Within a Deep Forest - Today's Time Waster

Within a Deep Forest"What did you do for Memorial Day, Jordan?" "Oh, I played Within a Deep Forest." That's how addicting this little devil of a game is. Within a Deep Forest is a freeware platformer for Windows that casts you as a little bouncing ball whose mission is to stop the evil Dr. Cliché from freezing the world. But don't let the cutesy premise fool you: this is a hard game. Its many puzzles will test your patience and your reflexes, but the controls are solid and the gameplay is deep. At certain milestones in the game, you're given access to a new ball materials, e.g. a pink one that bounces higher but is harder to control, and an "iron" one that can be used to break things, and in this way you can gain access to new areas. The game can be frustrating at times, but gaining a new material or entering a new area is extremely satisfying.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
