Free esyPlanner is a powerful, attractive calendar and scheduling app

Like many of you, I use a web-based app for my calendaring needs. My customers, however, aren't necessarily keen to make the switch from desktop applications just yet - and I have a number who need a good way to manage appointments and schedules from their PCs.

esyPlanner is a nice option. It sports a nice looking interface and provides both a full-featured calendar and Post-It style notes. Create and color code your categories, and set up multiple calendars to keep things like customer appointments separate from staff meetings.

Support for recurring events is excellent. Apart from daily/weekly/monthly events, you can set up "every X number" -- like every 3 days, 2 weeks, etc. It makes marking things like due dates and routine maintenance easy.

The learning curve with this app is kept to a minimum, so it's perfect for shop owners who aren't so computer-savvy. Tooltip balloons let you know which button does what, and they're small enough that they don't get in the way.

Cozi, family-ready software

cozi family planner onlineCozi was created by a group of ex-Microsofties to help address the complex dynamic needs of a family lifestyle nowadays. They created a complete scheduling environment to help families stay productive and on schedule. Cozi is a downloadable PC application that serves as a central location where families can plan, schedule and manage all the things they do in life. There is also a web-based version that supports Mac users.

Through Cozi users can access their family calendar, schedules, and notes information that are stored in the family's personal system, even when they are on the go. Reminders can be sent out and accessed by any PC or mobile phone you choose. This sounds like the ultimate family planner, 2.0 style. Did I mention it's free?

Create your space with IKEA Office Planner

IKEA Office PlannerIKEA is not a company we ordinarily associate with software, but it does know to sell office furniture, and to that end there's a handy little download on its web site called the IKEA Office Planner. It's a free app for Windows that lets you visualize the physical layout of your office, drag and drop models of furniture into it, and see it rendered in 3D. Of course, the whole point of the exercise is to get you to buy IKEA's flat-pack wares, and it'll even tally up the price of all your 3D furniture for you, but you could also just use it to get a feel for how much desk you have room for before hitting Office Depot.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
