AIM Phoneline APIs and developer contest

AIM Phoneline developer's challengeAOL is planning to release APIs for developers to mash-up the new (since May) AIM Phoneline application. AOL is also holding a developer contest to see who will develop the best application using AIM Phoneline. Phoneline was launched in May is supposed to compete with the likes of Skype, Gizmo, Vonage, and anyone else who dares. Contest entries will be accepted from Sept. 11 through Nov. 30th, the winner to receive $3500 and be announced in January. Second prize gets $1000. No matter if you win the contest or not, the APIs will be available sometime in the next few months for all developers to build, mash-up and integrate into applications. Rinnnnnng! Sorry, I have to take this call...

AOL gives away free phone numbers with AIM Phoneline

AIM PhonelineAOL has launched AIM Phoneline, a VoIP service announced back in May that gives anyone a free phone number that allows unlimited inbound calls for free from any standard phone. The service works through AIM Triton (which makes it Windows-only for now) and includes free caller ID and voicemail. In addition, there's an "Unlimited" service that allows unlimited outgoing calls to 30 countries for $9.95 per month. When you sign up for AIM Phoneline it will ask for your street address and then assign you a number local to your area, rather than allowing you to simply choose an area code as other services like SkypeIn and Vonage allow. When I tried to sign up I found, much to my surprise, that numbers in my area are not yet available, and there's no map or list of areas where it is available, which is a big strike against it. If you want my advice, AOL, let me choose my area code, let me pick from available numbers, and don't ask for my address. Apart from that, though, AIM Phoneline looks great.

That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
