Nowsy: News dashboard plus search

NowsyNowsy is feed reader that lets you add an unlimited number of feeds as panes on a personalized home page-style page. It has a clean, uncluttered interface but otherwise does little that will blow anyone away or make them switch from Netvibes or Google Personalized Homepage. For newshounds, however, it does have once nice feature: You can search among your feed items. Typing in a search term will filter your feed items so that only those items matching your search will show up. Though most decent feed readers have search or filter features, some users will prefer having their search results in this format. Nowsy also lets you create multiple pages, so you could have your feeds broken up by topic, etc. Nowsy lets you play around with most of its features without registration (via a cookie), but if you want to make sure your preferences are never lost you'll need to register.

Put Google Personalized Home in your Firefox sidebar

Google Personalized Home sidebarThis idea seems a little obvious in hindsight, but I didn't think of it, Google field technician Erica Joy did: Rather than keeping Google Personalized Home (a.k.a. Google IG) open in a tab, change the layout of your Gadgets so they're all in the left column, then configure Firefox to open it in the sidebar. That way you can always have quick access to your Personalized Home without switching away from the page you're interested in. For complete instructions, head over to Erica Joy's blog.

The 30 Boxes Webtop

30 Boxes Webtop30 Boxes' Narendra Rocherolle wrote in to tell us about the new 30 Boxes Webtop, which is basically, well, a personalized home page a la Netvibes or Goowy. What sets it apart, of course, is that it's tightly integrated with the 30 Boxes calendar, so if you're already a 30 Boxes user you may prefer it to other home page options. Right now it's pretty basic, with upcoming events, buddy updates, to-do list, and Google search widgets, plus the ability to add any web page--including other services like Gmail or Meebo--as an embedded widget. Rocherolle writes about the webtop update on the 30 Boxes blog, and from the looks of it there's lots more in the works. I hope, at the very least, they add an RSS feed widget soon.

Official Calendar widget for Google Personalized Home

Google Calendar widget for Google Personalized HomeReader Mark wrote in to let us know that Google has released a Google Calendar widget for Google Personalized Home. It looks pretty standard, showing a calendar view on top and events for the selected day (and the following day if there's room) down below. It also features Quick Add and Create event buttons.

[Thanks, Mark!]

New features for Goowy: Web-based IM and file storage

Goowy IMLast month I mentioned that Flash-based personalized home page Goowy was working on adding IM and online file storage functionality. It took a bit longer than I'd expected, but those features are now online. The web-based IM feature lets you sign on to MSN, Yahoo, ICQ or AOL and chat in your browser, and the web-based storage gives you a free 1GB virtual hard drive via Box.net. You can try Goowy out without registering by logging into the demo account.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
