Pepsi launches sleazy "Before You Score" iPhone app

Pepsi just put out a new iPhone app to promote its energy drink brand, AMP, but it already seems to be backfiring. The app is called "AMP Up Before you Score," and it gives guys tips and lines for picking up different types of girls. As girl-oriented blog Jezebel astutely points out, the "types" are part of the problem. It's 2009, and we're still breaking women down into 24 different clichés? Give me a break, Pepsi. For an extra-sleazy touch, you can use Before You Score to post about your successful "scores" to Facebook and Twitter.

I can try to see the other side of this - it's so over the top that you can't take it seriously, and it has to be a fun joke, right? - but it's not really fun or funny. Way to use technology to move society backward, major soft-drink manufacturer! You don't have to take my word for it, though. This one-sentence review of the app from a female friend of mine tells you everything you need to know: "I wonder if it tells you how to remove your shoe from your esophagus if you screw stuff up?"

Amazon and Pepsi plan to give away 1 billion DRM-free songs

Amazon MP3Amazon and Pepsi are planning to launch a yearlong promotion to give away 1 billion MP3s from Amazon's recently launched MP3 download store. The promotion will launch during the Super Bowl on Feb 3rd.

Here's how it works. Pepsi will print a code on 5 billion bottle caps. You can use the codes from 5 bottle caps to buy one song at Amazon Mp3.

Right now, that means you can buy DRM-free tracks from artists signed to EMI, Universal Music Group, Hollywood Records, and a number of smaller labels. Warner and Sony have not yet signed up with Amazon. But Billboard reports that the promotion could be incentive for the holdouts to sign up. That plus Wal-Mart is urging the music labels to participate in its DRM-free MP3 store.

This isn't the first time Pepsi's gotten involved in a major music promotion. Pepsi and Apple partnered in 2004 for a Super Bowl campaign to promote the iTunes music store. Of course, the goal at the time was to give away 25 million tracks, while customers only redeemed about 5 million. So just because Amazon and Pepsi say they've got 1 billion songs to give away doesn't mean they'll actually be delivering anywhere near that number.

Maximum Typing - Today's Time Waster

Maximum Typing
Sometimes we all need a little practice with our typing, and it's nice to see someone kick some butt while we're at it. Pepsi is promoting Pepsi Nex -- a soft drink sold in Japan -- with Maximum Typing. It's a pretty nifty online typing game, in the vein of QWERTY Warriors.

Instead of zapping enemies by typing letters though, as you type in the letter or combination of letters on an ice cube, the little guy on the left of the screen rushes up and punches, kicks, knees, or otherwise pummels the cube to smithereens. In between stages he has a tendency to take a swig from a bottle. I'm going to assume that it's Coca-Cola.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
