Download Squad's Pictures from The Crunchies After-Party

Don't worry, we're not going all Valleywag on our loyal readers, but with a bucket-load of photos from the Crunchies (and ensuing party) we thought it wise to separate the sober from the (Myspace-sponsored) party photos from San Francisco's City Hall. Thanks to all at TechCrunch for welcoming us Download Squad-ers to the event!

Mobaganda - A Mob Extravaganza!

MobagandaBringing together a group of people can be a pain. Facebook events and groups, eVites, emails, text messages, smoke signals.

Mobaganda aims to make the gathering process that much easier.

Simplicity seems to be the new h0t on the web, and we like it.

As soon as you visit Mobaganda, you'll notice that you don't have to sign up for anything. Say what? Useless you say! I HAVE to put in my username/pass somewhere!!!! Nope.

All you have to do is name the event and set the date and you're off!

As soon as you create the event, a unique page is created like this one. After 60 days, the pages go away, so no worries about URL's being gone forever.

People can RSVP on the page, and an RSS feed is immediately available to track which cool kids are coming.

Simple, easy, that's it.

Manage the mob with Mobaganda and spend your time on more important things, like grabbing the keg.

MyPunchbowl is on a move to battle Evite

MyPunchbowl is on a move to battle Evite

Evite might be the leader in online party invitations online, but that's not stopping MyPunchbowl from steaming ahead to battle.

MyPunchbowl has just landed some seed funding that will allow them to build out there increasingly popular invitation tools. The first round of funding will see MyPunchbowl sort out its revenue model as well as hire developers and initiate marketing efforts to grow their event planning website.

Download Squad originally covered their launch early this year. Punchbowl Software has watched the event space heat up, and this new cash will allow MyPunchbowl to be develop a strict verification and feedback process to ensure that its design is easy to use for the everyday party planner, making for a much more enjoyable planning process. This in turn could lead to some interface and design changes down the road , as well as some user suggested features.

MyPunchbowl is a free event planning website that helps coordinate, manage and plan parties through an easy to use party planner checklist and slick easy to use interface. Keep your eye on these guys.

Get your event dates automatically with Punchbowl

MyPunchbowl, the online party planning application, uses an algorithm to pick the best date for an event based on the actual responses of people that RSVP to the invitation. The "Pick a Date" feature recommends the best date from a set of dates that are supplied by the hosting party, in real time. As responses are received, the algorithm then recalculates the best possible date based on individual's status and VIP stature. The best date can either be selected by the host at anytime, or a new date can be easily made without the recommended date as a guide.

This sure beats spending hours sending out invitations and calling around to try and organize a party that everyone can attend.

Socializr, social event planning

socializr event planningWhat Friendster and Facebook have done with personal social networking, Socializr hopes to accomplish with event planning. Socializr was created by the founder of Friendster and a player in the social networking phenomenon, so it does have its similarities. A private test has been running since September 2006, with the live launch occurring last Friday.

Socializr is a free online service for people who want to start or share event and party information between friends and contacts. When setting up an account you can import contacts from a ton of sources (Friendster, MySpace, Flickr, Yelp, Evite, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, Gmail, Outlook or CSV). Setting up an event is relatively easy, choose a pre designed Socializr invite for a number of events including weddings, clubbing, Christmas party, birthdays, births, sweet 16's, graduations, and dinner parties, or design your own. Enter your events information and invite away! ( dont' forget the event date, time, location, and details).

Social Networking by WeHangHere

wehanghereWeHangHere is a different kind of social networking site. It helps users hook up with like minded individuals that hit the same locations after hours. The official launch date of the service was in October 2006, and it currently has a strong hold in the European market, with a small penetration in North America. Users of the site can search for a venue based on a specific city, or venue name. Members can also search either by username, or by gender, age and town and city locations. If you have your head buried in books, or in your career, it can be quite difficult to meet up with like minded individuals that enjoy the same types of locations. Or if you don't know the locations to hit, you can browse the site looking for one that might be your style.

I wouldn't call it a dating site per say, but user profiles, or essential info as WHH calls them, consist of age, height, education, language, occupation, country, children, favorite drink, relationship, like to hang with, and looking for, as well as a list of locations the user frequents. This helps users get a better idea of what types of locations they should frequent to meet up with similar individuals. Another player in this type of market includes Meetup.com. Although it does not specifically target clubs and bars as WeHangHere tends to do.

Party planning with MyPunchbowl

mypunchbowl party planningI'm sure a lot of you had holiday parties over the last few weeks. How did your planning go? You could surely have used the new MyPunchbowl service. MyPunchbowl is set to launch its online party planning service on January 15th. Built by Punchbowl Software, it allows users to create an online community for celebrations. Members can use the service before, during and after parties to coordinate events, research ideas from the community, and share party memories after the event.

Unfortunately I was not in on the beta testing for the service, and it is now closed awaiting the January 15th launch. So we will have to stay tuned to check out the how well this service helps us party plan. Similar services in this sector include Evite.com, Eventful, and Upcoming.org.

Firefox 2 launch party

Firefox PartyIs the new version of Firefox really a reason to party? Literally, there are currently 170 parties registered for the launch of Firefox 2. I can just imagine a myriad of cliche games, like "which Firefox 2 feature are you" where party guests wear a secret name tag on their back and go around asking questions about themselves, trying to guess what they are. Games or not, I really don't get the point of a software launch party for a browser, but I'll tell you one thing, there is no way I would ever attend an IE7 launch party. If you couldn't tell from past posts from me on IE7, I'm not a big fan. I won't be attending the Firefox parties either because I have a life, but it does sound like fun (I think). If you are so inclined, have a good time, but be sure to save me a Firefox cookie, and let me know how it went.

Civiballs is a beautiful, soothing physics puzzle Time Waster

CiviballsI have an absolute weakness for physics games, and while Civiballs isn't the strongest physics-based game, what it lacks in the physics department it makes up for a few times over in style and fun.

In Civiballs, you are presented with a few colored balls, and your goal is to get those balls into the same-colored urn on the level. The "civi" part of Civiballs is that there are 3 sets of levels to play, each representing a different civilization. While the civilization doesn't affect gameplay, the artwork for each level is beautifully themed to it's appropriate era.

To play the game, you are given only one tool - a sword with which to cut the chains that are holding the balls. The puzzle part of the game is in figuring out what order, and with what timing to cut each chain. Do it right, and all the right balls end up in the right urns, with no stray balls entering an urn (a no-no). Do it wrong, and you get to start over again.

Civiballs is not terribly deep on gameplay; the entire game can be completed in about 15 minutes. But if you enjoy this type of game, it will be a very enjoyable 15 minutes.
