Fugly Friday - Welkom to the Willy's en Marjetten nightmare

You know, the reason we do these is in part to educate, in part to entertain, and in no small part because we just find the weirdest stuff on the web and must share it. Like the old Ellen Degeneres joke, "here, this tastes awful, try some!" With that in mind, take a moment to view Welkom op de site van Willy's & Marjetten. Yes, fugly comes in many flavors and languages. In this case, it's Flemish. Read the hilarious Google translation here.*

When you are done wiping the blood from your eyeballs, let's discuss this atrocity, shall we? First off, clearly the gods of GIF smiled upon this site, as we see so often in the fugly department. Look at all those animations, bouncing around and not really doing anything but causing cognitive dissonance. So that's where my migraine came from!

Willy's page isn't all bad, however. Instead of using bgsound or autoplaying a media file, there's an auto-play Flash button which plays some truly atrocious music. But at least you can turn it off. That's a plus.

I should also mention Willy's not entirely living in the stone ages where design is concerned. While I found this page on a hunt for FrontPage atrocities (FrontPage being wanted for browser war crimes, and increasingly tough to track down), the site appears to have eschewed the old FP template for... CSS! Yep, I found a stylesheet attached to the page. Unfortunately the only thing it is used for: setting the font to Marker Felt. Cue the sad trombone. Yeah, the page is otherwise a mess of <td>'s, which makes babies cry.

*Epilogue: I hear this page was supposed to be set up as an example of bad 90's web design. And, in fact, it was built for a Flemish TV series called Willy's en Marjetten. So it would seem the fugly was all in the name of parody. Note that, at the end of the series, all the characters died. Bad design kills, kids, so stay off FrontPage and stay in design school. That said, how many real and serious sites still look like this? Send us your answers in the comments.

Flutter: Like Twitter in 26 characters (but not really)

If you've ever felt like Twitter's 140 character limit is just too restrictive -- because it gives you too much space to work with, Flutter is for you. OK, Flutter's not an actual service, but the folks at Slate have put together a mockumentary on a new "nano-blogging" service that forces users to send updates in 26 characters or less.

The video mocks both users and the companies trying to build and monetize micro-blogging, life-streaming, and social media in general. But it's the kind of funny that you laugh at, and then go and forward to your friends on Facebook and Twitter. It's not quite as mean-spirited or dismissive of micro-blogging as some other parodies.

Cultspace: Because MySpace isn't enough of a cult already

CultspaceFeeling a little emptiness in your life? Is that space not being filled by MySpace, Orkut, or even Fuzzster? Try Cultspace, a new social networking hub for would-be cult leaders.. In case you've never started a cult before, Cultspace makes it easy: Just create an account and give your cult a name. Other Cultspace users can then read your cult's profile and religious texts and interact with it. You can approve or disapprove of other cults, declare war on other cults or make alliances, and rate them on a number of criteria (Good and Evil are mysteriously absent). Of course, the Cultspace FAQ takes every opportunity to emphasize that Cultspace is for parody and make-believe only.

GGG-Gmail - Freaky Friday Find

ggg-gmailConsidering the number of people dropping their standalone email clients for Gmail's service, it's hard to imagine what could be better... But if you like your mail with a dash of the hip and the hop (as the Coz would say), maybe give GGG-Gmail a try. Sucka. Be warned that the words on the page could be as explicit as what you're probably listening to right now... Also be aware this is a joke, and isn't some secret Google Labs project. Yet.

Note: links on the homepage aren't "safe for work" in most cases, and the language on the GGG-Gmail page might be a bit offensive to some...

Life on Mars - Today's Time Waster

life on marsAs if this world wasn't wacky enough for you, along comes the web game show "Know Like an Earthling." Apparently once tied to a show on Australian TV, the Life on Mars site is still up so you can still play the games— all 30 of them. They're Wario Ware type mini games, like slap the mosquito (similar to a game I used to play in System 7 on my Mac), and Talk Show Chair Smash. Each game is supposed to be a location on Earth (Finland has a hot tub game, India gets a Bollywood inspired one). They're quick, cutesy, but fun.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
