Palm Europe rolls out Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for Treo 750

Treo 750 WM6Sure, it's nice when hackers manage to squeeze a new operating system onto an old device. But sometimes things work better if you wait for the official upgrade. That's why we're happy and sad to tell you that Palm has issued a free Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for the Treo 750/750v -- in Europe.

Earlier this month Palm announced Australian customers would get an upgrade. The European version is available to Vodafone customers in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

So far, there's been no word on a WM6 upgrade for AT&T customers in the US, although we assume it's just a matter of time. Of course, you know what they say about people who assume.

Palm to offer free Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for Treo 750

Palm Treo 750 WM6Not only will Palm be offering Treo 750 users a chance to upgrade their phones from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobil 6, but the company won't charge for it.

That means support for HTML-formatted email, Office 2007 file formats, and HSDPA support. There's slightly less memory available on a Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6, but the folks over at Mobility Site got a chance to play with one at CTIA, and they say it seems just as responsive as a Treo with Windows Mobile 5.0

There's no word on when the update will be available or how current Treo users will be able to sign up for it.

Zap aliens with your PalmOS Treo cameraphone

Toyspring has issued a major update to PalmOS game Arcade Reality. In a nutshell, Arcade Reality lets you zap aliens. But unlike a billion other space invaders-themed games, this one is played in real space using the camera on Palm Treo phones.

The video is actually of version 1.0 or Arcade Reality. Version 1.1 includes the following updates:
  • Bitmap aliens explosions are much cooler.
  • When aliens take on damage they emit smoke.
  • There's support for autotargetting.
There's a limited free trial version of Arcade Reality. The full version will set you back $14.95, but future upgrades are free for registered users. The game should work with Treo 650/680/700p units.

YoMoBlog - blogging from mobile devices

YoMoBlogSay what you will about Dave Winer, he's hard to ignore in the blogosphere. Recently Dave released YoMoBlog, a web-based blogging client for mobile devices like Blackberries, Treos and Pocket PCs. All you do is fill out a few fields on the start page (which we've linked to above), which include blog url, email address, username , and password, and if all goes well you should be able to post directly to your blog.

In my tests I found YoMoBlog to be extremely slow, but I'm sure that can be chalked up to weird internet inconsistencies. Otherwise it seemed to work fine. Note that your blog engine must support the Metaweblog API for this site to work.

Personally I'm not big on entering text into a mobile device, but this service could be a godsend in the event you're in a situation where blogging in a timely fashion is critical. Of course, the fine print says, "This is experimental software. Please back up your data. We are not responsible for any loss in service or loss of data entered into the system. Will not use your personal information for any purpose other than to allow you to create and edit posts on your weblog. The security of the system is very simple, don't trust it for sensitive information. We make no guarantees about performance, uptime, and we may cancel the service at any time, for any reason, at our discretion.", so you certainly wouldn't want to build a business around this service, or rely on it as your only mobile blogging solution.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
