Color Infection - Time Waster

Color InfectionI hope the genre of physics-based games on the web never dies, because they're just too damn fun. Color Infection is just such a game, where the object is to "infect" all of the yellow balls by turning them brown. Yellow balls are turned brown when they come in contact with brown balls, so the object of the game is to release the balls in such an order that every yellow ball is at some point touched by a brown ball.

Because much of the game relies on balls slowly rolling down slightly inclined planes, the game can become very slow. Luckily, the game designer anticipated that problem, and if you tap one of the number keys on your keyboard while you are playing, the game speed will multiply by the number you pressed. I found the game to be mostly playable at 5x regular speed, but there are moments requiring very careful timing where I had to slow it down to 2x or even 1x.

World Golf Tour - Time Waster

World Golf Tour
Just how far can you go with an online game? By some measures, World Golf Tour could be considered a Time Waster that is all grown up. It's trying to be a desktop-quality game provided online.

The game play is pretty much par for the course, as far as golf games go (sorry, I couldn't resist), and the course imagery is gorgeous, maybe a little too much so. As is typical in golf, there are only a few things that move: in this case the player, the ball, and the flag. Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that these are rendered in 3D on top of a static image of the course, making them look out of place.

Worse, to achieve the beautiful effect of having photographic imagery for the game, you are confined to a set number of vantage points, many of which are fine when the ball lies in the center of them, but become very awkward when the ball is not. The terrain very obviously has undulations in it, and the ball seems to react fairly reasonably to the terrain, but you can tell that the ball's movement is somehow disconnected from the scene.

Although all of this seems like criticism, the truth is that these are compromises that are reasonable for such a beautiful free online game, if it wasn't for one fatal flaw: Flash. Unfortunately, on my reasonable speedy machine, Flash seemed to act up on every third shot, and would cause my shot meter to jump around sporadically, making it impossible to make a decent shot, never mind a good one. Now, I'm not very good at this as it is, but in one 9-hole round I had at least 8 shots completely ruined by a freezing display.

Now to be fair, World Golf Tour is still in beta, and hopefully they can iron out this very ugly divot in what is otherwise a fairly decent fairway.

You can play a skills game for free without signing up for an account, but to play a full round or to play with your friends, you'll need to sign up for an account and give away your email address and birthday. Is it worth it? I guess it depends on how much you like golf.

Coign of Vantage - Time Waster

Coign of VantageIf you get seasick when looking at three-dimensional games, this time waster might not be for you. Coign of Vantage is neat little game that uses your vantage point in three dimensions to change how something looks. The game presents you with a bunch of seemingly randomly scattered blocks, but if you move the cursor on the screen, shifting your vantage point, you can find a point at which an image takes shape.

It might take you a few tries to catch on, but luckily the game gives you hints on the first few. One tip is to always start with your cursor in the center of of the game screen, then move it slowly. Usually, you can look for where the pieces trail off to a point, and try to bring that around to the front. If this doesn't make any sense, try the game and come back, and I bet it will then.

The game is to try to reveal as many of the images as you can in 5 minutes, and you earn back time for quick identifications. Perfect for your next coffee break.

Sleepless Assassin - Time Waster

Sleepless Assassin

Some days when you're sitting at your desk at work, don't you just wish that you had a different job? Something a little more exciting, and maybe a bit dangerous? Something that makes you feel alive... Like maybe being an assassin!

If you're looking to get a little fix of being an assassin without actually having to, you know, kill people, check out Sleepless Assassin, a Flash-based side scrolling action game. While it looks and handles much like many other games that are of a similar style, Sleepless Assassin has one very cool trick up its sleeve.

When it comes time to shoot enemies, your character has a bow and arrow. Since the default view is fairly close up, the screen pulls back to give you a wider view when you click to draw the bow. You can then aim, and an arc is shown to give you an idea of your arrow's flight path. This allows for some "trick shots" where you can kill enemies that can't see you, as well as giving you a quick way to get the lay of the land.

In terms of the fun factor of the game as a time waster, with (very) little practice you can be good enough to have a good time with this little gem.

The Rather Difficult Font Game - Time Waster

The Rather Difficult Font GameYou just have to love an online game that knows exactly what it aims to be. And the concept of this game is, well, rather difficult. The Rather Difficult Font Game tests your ability to recognize typefaces by showing you a piece of text and then four font names. Your job is to correctly choose the correct typeface.

As with any multiple-choice test with a limited set of answers, this game becomes rather less difficult as you go, if you're careful to remember what you've already seen. While we're certainly not font experts, by process of elimination we were able to score an 18 out of 30 on our first try.

Like any good time waster, this one can be done relatively quickly, like maybe during your coffee break. And if you are the type of person that feels guilty about the time you spend playing time wasting online games, you can tell yourself that at least with this one you're learning something. Whatever lets you live with yourself, right?

Ninja Rampage - Time Waster

Ninja RampageYou'd think it would be hard to do an online time-waster type game about being a ninja. Surprisingly, Ninja Rampage does just that.

The game is incredibly simple; your ninja character really only has a few moves: jump, crouch, walk, and stab with your sword. But for all that, the game still manages to move quickly and is fun. Ninja Rampage plays sort of like a side-scroller, except that each level is one static screen. Your goal is to move from the left side of the screen through the right side without getting killed by guards or booby-traps.

There is no apparent limit to the number of times you can die and try again, which is the right decision for a time waster. It makes it that much harder to stop playing when you know that you can try just one more time to solve a particularly frustrating level.

For a little ninja fun on your lunch break, you could do worse than Ninja Rampage.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
