Microsoft, Nokia announce Office Mobile coming to Nokia phones

Microsoft has been making a mobile version of Office for years. But it's only been available on devices running mobile versions of Windows (what we now call Windows Mobile or Windows Phone, and what was once called PocketPC). Today, Microsoft and Nokia announced a deal that will bring Office Mobile to Nokia smartphones.

This is the first time Office Mobile will be available on handsets that don't run Windows Mobile. The two companies have announced plans to work together on a range of mobile solutions. One of the key points is that is that Nokia's Symbian powered smartphones will be able to run mobile versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote. Users will be able to "view, edit, create, and share" Office documents from their mobile phones.

Nokia is also working on improved Exchange ActiveSync support, and expects to roll out support for other features including mobile access to intranet portals build on Microsoft SharePoint Server.

Microsoft could bring Office suite, other apps to the iPhone

While we're guessing Microsoft would love to make Windows Mobil customers out of each and every iPhone user, that doesn't mean the company doesn't see a business opportunity in Apple's cellphone. After all, Microsoft has been selling Office software to Mac users for years, so now that Apple has provided an SDK for the iPhone, why not port Office Mobile and other Microsoft applications to the iPhone?

Fortune Magazine reports that a team of Microsoft developers has been poring over the iPhone SDK. While the company still has to determine whether it would make business sense to develop for the iPhone, doing so shouldn't be hard. After all, Apple is licensing Microsoft's ActiveSync and Exchange Server technology to provide push email capabilities.

What Microsoft applications would you like to see for the iPhone? We're going to assume Office Mobile is a given, but what about Windows Live Messenger? What we're really hoping for is Virtual PC 2007, but we're not going to hold our breath.

Office Mobile 6.1 priced at $50

Microsoft finally released an updated version of Office Mobile with support for Office 2007 documents yesterday. That means Windows Mobile 5.0/6 users can finally open and edit DOCX, PPTX, and XLSX files. Office Mobile 6.1 is a free upgrade for some users, but others will have to fork out some cash if they want the latest and greatest. This is the first time Microsoft has sold a version of Office Mobile directly to consumers.

Up until now it was unclear how much Microsoft would be charging. But now that you can pick up a copy of Office Mobile 6.1 at Handango, we finally know the price: $50. And we're a bit ambivalent. On the one hand, this is a bargain basement price compared to Office 2007 for the desktop. On the other hand, nobody would ever mistakes Office Mobile for Office 2007. It's a stripped down version of the application meant for working on the go.

So how do you know if you need to pay for Office Mobile 6.1 or if it's a free upgrade?
  • If you have a version of Windows Mobile 6 that includes Office Mobile, you can upgrade for free.
  • If you have a version of Windows Mobile 6 that did not ship with Office Mobile, say goodbye to $50.
  • If you have a version of Windows Mobile 5.0 that came with Office Mobile, you may be able to upgrade for free, but some users with older devices have reported that they are unable to install the upgrade.
  • If you have a version of Windows Mobile 5.0 that does not include Office Mobile, you're out of luck.
  • If you're using Windows Mobile 2003SE or earlier, Microsoft would prefer to think you don't exist recommend upgrading to a newer unit.

Microsoft release Office Mobile 6.1 (for real this time)

Office Mobile 6.1A few months ago, Microsoft accidentally published the download link for an updated version of Office Mobile and then quickly removed the file, which had not been meant for public release yet.

But now it looks like Office Mobile 6.1 is ready for prime time. If you've got a Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6 phone or PDA, you'll want to grab this update.

The update is free for anyone who has an existing copy of Office Mobile, which should cover most Windows Mobile users. it adds support for Office 2007 documents including DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files. There's also enhanced viewing capabilities for Excel Mobile, the ability to add SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile. Users can also view and extract files from ZIP folders.

If you don't have a previous version of Office Mobile, you can buy a full version of Office Mobile 6.1. This is the first time Microsoft will be offering a full version of Office Mobile for sale. We can't find a purchase link right now, so we're not sure how much Microsoft will be charging for Office Mobile 6.1 But odds are you can get it for free anyway.

Office Mobile 6.1 is NOT available yet, but will be soon

Office Mobile 6.1Remember how we told you Microsoft had released Office Mobile 6.1? Sure you do, it was just yesterday. But it turns out the software won't actually be publicly available for another few weeks.

Microsoft's Jason Langridge had accidentally posted a message on his blog saying the update was ready. In fact, what had happened was Microsoft sent out a download link to employees for internal testing. The link was promptly removed.

Office Mobile 6.1 will allow users to open and edit Office 2007 documents, extract files from zipped folders, and view enhanced charts in Excel Mobile.

The update will be a free upgrade for Office Mobile 6.0 users. This will be the first time Microsoft has offered Office Mobile directly to users. Typically the software comes preinstalled on Windows Mobile devices. Users who do not already have a full-featured version of Office Mobile 6 on their Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6 devices will also have an opportunity to download a full version of the application. It's not clear if Office Mobile 6.1 will be a free or paid download.

Microsoft launches Office Mobile 6.1

Mobile Office 6.1Microsoft has released an updated version of Office Mobile for Windows Mobile 6 phones and PDAs. The biggest change is that Microsoft has added support for Office 2007 documents.

It kind of baffles us that Microsoft would release Windows Mobile 6 around the same time as Office 2007 and not automatically include support for docx, pptx, and xlsx documents, but it's nice to see Microsoft catch up with itself here.

This is the first time that Microsoft has issued an Office Mobile update directly to consumers. Typically Office Mobile is built into the Windows Mobile operating system and is only available from hardware makers.

Office Mobile 6.1 also includes:
  • Enhanced charts in Excel Mobile
  • Ability to view SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile
  • Ability to extract files from zipped folders
The upgrade is free for Windows Mobile 6 users. While a number of sites are reporting that you can download the update directly from Microsoft, the link doesn't seem to be working for us at the moment. If anyone has a better link, please let us know.
