Google, Yahoo!, CNBC, WSJ set real-time stock quotes free

A number of web sites have been offering free stock quotes for years. But they've always been delayed by about 15 minutes or so. While 15 minutes doesn't sound like a lot, if you've dumped a lot of money into one stock and it's tanking, you want to know as soon as possible. The solution has been to sign up for subscription-based services like E*Trade.

Now it looks like you can save your money. A whole slew of companies including Google, Yahoo!, CNBC, and the Wall Street Journal have announced the availability of real-time stock quotes. For free.

Yahoo! has partnered with BATS, while a slew of other companies have partnered with NASDAQ to provide the up to the minute stock quotes.

One more nail in the coffin: Nasdaq delists SCO

After filing for Chapter 11 protection in September, The SCO Group has been delisted from the Nasdaq trading index. The companies ticker symbol, formerly SCOX is kaput, although the non-indexed SCOX.PK (PK stands for "pink sheet") remains.Groklaw has brilliantly juxtaposed today's press release with the 2003 release stating SCO's intent to sue IBM.

For the uninitiated, SCO, formerly known as Caldera Systems, was at one time one of the largest Linux distributors for the business environment. In 2003, the newly named SCO systems sued IBM for $1 billion dollars, claiming that IBM's Linux products used parts of UNIX (which SCO claimed to own the rights to), thus devaluing the SCO brand. The story is extremely sordid and complicated, this Wikipedia page has a pretty good assessment of the various controversies and Groklaw has covered the various lawsuits involving SCO since 2003.

In short, SCO tried to claim intellectual property ownership of various parts of source code they claimed to be part of the open-source Linux kernel (one of the more insane claims, that SCO owned UNIX was legally dismissed in August 2007, and the actual owner of the UNIX and UNIXWare code, Novell, was awarded damages). SCO then sued manufacturers of competing Linux distributions for various claims ranging from the usage of SCO owned source code, trade secret violations and anti-competitive practices. And this from a company who's most successful product was actually called, "OpenLinux."

Objectivity aside - we can't wait for these guys to finally be out of business for good.

Google Share Error

google share errorSeems like someone made a booboo at the close of the NASDAQ last Thursday, dropping Google shares $350.

The supposed details of this massive error started at the close of NASDAQ when Google trading ended at 4pm with $387.12 a share. Shortly after closing, Google made an announcement that they had better then expected earnings, but less then the quarter before. 4:02 pm hit, and Google's shares dropped down to about $364, then gained steadily to $391. When the $391 per share price hit, it seems like someone at Nasdaq hit some wrong numbers when an Instinet-ATS order triggered trades at $38 per share between 4:10 and 4:12pm. When that started happening, trades starting going wild between $38.05 and $37.81.

Everything was sorted out and restored shortly after.

The New York Sun has some great stories about traders. Especially one who was told by his broker that his previous 200 share investment in Google at $380 per share, $76,000 total investment, was down $68,400. I'm sure someone at the Securities and Exchange Commission is going to have some major explaining to do.
