Mozilla plugs first hole in Firefox 3.5

Yes, the JIT security flaw that was being buzzed about two days ago has already been corrected.

The bug was originally identified on July 9th. As I mentioned in the last post, the patch was going to be released at the end of the month - but Mozilla wasn't foolish enough to let the bug go unaddressed for that long. Sometimes a flood of criticism will alter timetables ever so slightly.

Apart from the one big exploit that was plastered all over the internet, the 3.5.1 update takes care of about 20 other issues, including slow startup and (thank god) a new icon for OS/2.

The new build has already been pushed to getfirefox.com and is also available via the check for updates option on the Firefox help menu.

Mozilla's new Addon Collector lets you bundle, subscribe to addon packs

You may already have noticed a slight facelift over at the Firefox Add-ons site. Well, that's not the only change going on. Downloading and discovering new add-ons for Firefox has taken another evolutionary step with the release of Mozilla's new Add-on Collector - which is available as an add-on for Firefox (how's that for circular?).

Install Collector and sign in to your Mozilla account. You'll find the login form on your add-ons menu under a new Subscriptions tab. Once you've signed in, creating a pack is as simple as selecting your favorite addons and pressing the publish button. The button also lets you fire off a recommendation via email, though it's totally DIY right now. There's no external address book support but the form will ask if you want to remember the addresses you enter.

Userscripts.org straps on a (Mozilla) Jetpack

While it's barely been available to the public for a week, Mozilla's Jetpack project is already starting to take off. The collection of scripts as already grown from two simple demos to more than 20. Clearly developers are excited about the ease and speed with which Jetpack addons can be created.

Why, they're a lot like Userscripts - which may have something to do with a new page on Userscripts.org. In addition to "power-ups" that run in Firefox with Greasemonkey, you can download a growing number of Jetpack customizations from the popular site.

Most of the scripts are fairly basic at this point - a YouTube downloader, GMail checker, etc. - but this early enthusiasm is a good indication that Jetpack is going to be a big hit for Mozilla.

Let's hear it for add-on functionality without bothersome browser restarts!

Firefox has 100% market share on one continent!

I can just imagine the scene earlier this decade: some Microsoft bigwig sitting at an oversized, lacquered hardwood table snidely remarking, "it'll be a cold day in Hell before we lose the browser war to Mozilla." Interestingly enough, on Earth's coldest continent, they've already lost.

Yes, Firefox now has 100% of the browser market in at least two places: one, my house. Two, Antarctica. While neither of those stats is particularly impressive, you've got to start somewhere, right, Mozilla?

And it's not like Microsoft or Apple can claim the same thing - Antarctica is pretty much the only continent on Earth where a browser would even have a fighting chance to claim 100% of the market.

We can only wait patiently for the gang at Mozilla start producing t-shirts that proudly proclaim "One down, six to go."

edit: the graph above presents one additional point of discussion. Will a browser someday claim 110% of the market? Graphs don't lie!

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
