Microsoft opens its first retail stores - Video

After months of planning, Microsoft officially opened its first bricks and mortar retail store today in Scottsdale, Arizona. The store launch comes on a day when Microsoft launched its next-generation Windows 7 operating system, and began selling PCs through its online store.

Microsoft will obviously be using its retail stores to sell software, but also Microsoft hardware including the Xbox 360 and Zune HD. The stores will also sell computers and smartphones running Windows and Windows Phone. That includes a number of PCs from major computer manufacturers.

Overall, the whole thing looks an awful lot like another company's retail stores... I just can't quite put my finger on.... oh right. Apple.

Anyway, Microsoft also has a "Microsoft Answers Suite" which isn't exactly a bar filled with geniuses -- but it is a place where customers can bring computers to have an attempt to diagnose and fix problems.

The video above was shot at the grand opening today. You can find a ton of pictures of the store at Gizmodo.

Leaked docs provide a hint of how the Microsoft Retail stores could look

Microsoft Store concept
Microsoft is expected to launch a chain of retail stores in the not-too-distant future. If I had to guess, I'd say the stores will probably look like a software-heavy cross between a Best Buy and an Apple store. But the folks at Gizmodo got their hands on a leaked PowerPoint presentation that includes a number of concept designs for the store. Some of these concepts may eventually be included in the actual stores, while others may be nothing other than big ideas that'll be ready for the public around the same time as Duke Nukem Forever.

The documents depict a store that will focus on Microsoft hardware like the Xbox 360 and Surface tables, as well as software including Windows 7 and Windows Mobile. There's also a heavy emphasis in the slides on PCTV,which is a clever way of re-branding Windows Media Center as a primarily TV-focused interactive media component of Windows 7.

Microsoft has kind of downplayed Windows Media Center features over the last few years. I'm guessing that's because PC users flocked to internet video sites that let you watch media in a web browser, making the concept of a full-screen interface for local and internet media, as well as live TV from a TV tuner more of a niche product.

I'm hoping that the focus on PCTV in these slides means that Microsoft plans to add new internet content to Windows Media Center to make it a viable alternative to firing up the web browser. In fact, some of the slides show an Internet TV screen complete with Hulu. Right now there is no official Hulu plugin for Windows Media Center.

Microsoft retail stores coming soon to a strip mall near you

Microsoft retail store mockup
Microsoft is preparing to launch a chain of retail stores. Apple has had its own stores for a while, but while Apple has a whole line of hardware and software products to sell, Microsoft is first and foremost a software company. Sure, Microsoft could fill store shelves with Zune portable media players and Xbox 360 video game consoles. But it sounds like Microsoft will work out partnerships with hardware makers to sell computers and peripherals capable of running Microsoft products in addition to boxed Microosft software.

Still, I can't help but wonder why Microsoft thinks operating its own stores will be more profitable than selling software downloads and getting physical copies of its software into existing retail outlets. Maybe this is really just a branding initiative, since that whole Seinfeld thing didn't really work out.

Microsoft announced yesteday that it's hired former DreamWorks exec David Porter to head the company's retail store unit.

Microsoft launches online store, sells downloadable software

Microsoft Store
Microsoft has launched a new online store, cleverly titled the Microsoft Store. I know, who woulda thunk? The fact that Microsoft is selling software like Windows Vista and Office 2007 as well as hardware like the Xbox 360 isn't particularly surprising. But what is new is the fact that Microsoft is offering customers the option of purchasing physical media like CDs and DVDs or downloadable software. And that covers all Microsoft software that's available on the site, including Windows upgrades, full versions of Windows, and Office.

Microsoft charges the same price for downloads as it does for softwar that comes on a disc and stuffed in a box. I would have expected Microsoft to charge a few bucks less for the downloadable version since there are no shipping or packaging costs. But the company apparently decided to go another way.

The other surprising thing? The fact that it's 2008 and this is the first time Microsoft has sold these products as digital downloads.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
